I was a little nervous about the same sex component of this book and was afraid it might be a bit preachy or raunchy-- instead, this will be one of my favorites because of the high quality of the writing, story building, character development and simply enchanting tale.

Don't let this one slip by because you might be a bit squeamish -- I really loved this book and want everyone I know to read it. The story challenges all kinds of stereotypes. I love the balance of mystery, victorian setting, steampunk, gender independence and yes, romance -- Give yourself the gift of fine writing and great narration.

I can hardly wait to read the next book by Machenzi Lee.

Something has always been missing from my life. A hole that I could never seem to fill. When I accidentally turn a coven of witches into nightmares, I find out what that something is. Magic. And it turns out, I have a crap load of it. As a latent power awakens deep inside of me, I'm exposed to one of the most powerful and corrupt organizations in the magical world - the Mages' Guild. Barely knowing a spell from a few swear words and luck, I won't be able to evade them alone. And that's when I meet him.

She hires me to prove dark magic was involved. Hey, it's what I do as a paranormal investigator, so I get why she thinks I can help. But my secretary, Esther, a ghost from the 1920s flapper era, and Kelly Chan, my magically engineered protector, are dead-set against me getting involved. If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Throwing Shade at Shadows

Any additional comments?

I have really enjoyed the series but WHY oh WHY do authors think multiple POV is a good storytelling tool ????? Yuck. Hoping 4-6 avoid this overdone trope.

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

I was so looking forward to this installment but I am really having trouble listening to it. I am so surprised actually for I didn't realize how really talented your narrators are - until you hear someone who is not a professional narrator. In this author's reading, it is a challenge to tell the voices apart and after so many with one narrator - it It is very difficult to shift to such a monotone delivery. Please consider re-recording???

How did the narrator detract from the book?

I am guessing because this was an auto question to come up - that I am not the first person to have problems with the narrator. I don't think I am going to be able to finish listening.....

Would you try another book from Neal Stephenson and Nicole Galland and/or the narrators?

Neal Stephenson would have been better to work with Jodi Taylor! This is like a "take 2" version... better character development and neal stephenson's touch ... but it really feels like a copy of someone else's idea.

It drags a bit in the later chapters and I had trouble sticking with it... but overall, I liked the book --- but just "ok" not great.

What disappointed you about The Illustrious?

The writing was overly descriptive and the action didn't seem connected to the story. I never figured out what the story was really about... other than a few plot lines that were "chapter" stories. It could have been good... but the idea just .. pardon the pun... but it ran out of steam....

The writing was too heavy and just didn't give us a good story.
