Although the story was well-plotted and held my interest, I found myself struggling with some of the narration. There wasn't enough difference in the various voices for me to distinguish who was speaking and I would've liked more variation in the actual tone. It seemed rather flat. Even so, I enjoyed it enough that I'd listen to another in the series.

Harry Starke left the Memphis PD to start his own PI agency. He's not the typical hard-up detective. The son of a respected judge, he has his own agency and is obviously not wanting for money. But Harry is not an idle rich business owner. When a young woman whom he saw in a bar jumps to her death in terror as he tries to save her, Harry can't relax until he gets to the root cause of her actions.

He's tough, unorthodox, and not above breaking a law or two to uncover the truth. He's a ladies' man who doesn't manage to resist temptation, despite a long relationship. He's a paradox of honor and dishonor, with a good heart to redeem the sleazy side.

I enjoyed the story and the characters and will listen to more in the series.

I've enjoyed all the Corgi Files thus far, but this latest audio offering is a favorite. Sherlock and Watson must nose out (pun intended) a dastardly dognapping ring in their Oregon community, but it's Zack Anderson, unintended owner of a local award-winning winery, who puts the pieces together to expose the perps. I love Zack's offbeat humor and the scene where he's forced by Sherlock and a local pet store owner to purchase a 'pizzle' - look it up! - is hilarious.

The story ends with a reference to Zack's late wife's death and now I'm anxious for book six to be released in audio format. No fair making us wait, Jeffrey and Bob!

You know it's not going to turn out well when two unrelated men are constrained by a wealthy man's will to follow clues to a sapphire in order to inherit the deceased's estate. The clues are engaging, the setting is atmospheric and the writing is superb. I loved Jake Urry's narration, which propelled the story forward, fit the style of the novel to a T, and didn't leave me guessing as to who was speaking.

In all, a well done collaboration between an excellent mystery and an outstanding narrator. I hope it continues in other mysteries.

The latest in the Beatrice Hyde-Clare Regency cozies is simply delicious - the mysterious death, the Regency setting, Beatrice's continued flaunting of her family's restraints and her continued infatuation (dare we call it love?) for the Duke of Kesgrave.. Beatrice doesn't exactly break her prior promise to Kesgrave to stop investigating bodies that she stumbles across. This time, she's invited into the case of Mr Wilson's death by poison.

As usual, Lynn Messina presents us with an interesting investigation, with characters who drew me in and engaged me completely. I can't say too much, for fear of a spoiler, but it's obvious and well-received by me that Bea's cases will not cease in the future, thanks to Lady Hardcastle's offer to provide clients on a consulting basis. Thus Bea will continue in her ways and continue to delight me.

I love Bea's evolution from scared little mouse to assertive (if still a bit scared) woman. When a man drops dead at her feet while she is placing a fictitious obituary at a London paper, in an attempt to thwart her family's marriage plans for her, she is once again drawn into a murder investigation with the Duke of Kesgrave as her cohort. Their interactions, which are mainly filled with misunderstanding each other, are amusing and no doubt designed to get the reader interested in what they will do next. It works! Kudos to author Lynn Messina for not developing a romance between them immediately. Her method is much more engaging and realistic.

I love a story with a plucky heroine, and this one fits the bill. After living under her family's heavy thumb, Beatrice emerges as a woman ready to finally take her life back. Good mystery elements in this one, too.
