Thank you, Ms. Clark for this excellent book about history that has been buried. I learned so much and grieve over the cruelty of humanity toward each other. Two remarkable human beings.

I loved everything about this book! I listened to it on my commute home each night and couldn’t wait to get to the next part. For the first time in quite some time, I felt I was in the story watching it all take place rather then merely listening. And the narrator? Is there a narrator performance Oscar? If there is, Jenna should receive it! She was truly phenomenal! I would listen again just to hear her performance. Truly this is an all around great listen.

This is an author for whom I have great respect, however, this is not her best work. I believe this is her first published book. Her more recent publications demonstrate a more developed theology and more depth in her writing skill.

For me, the most distracting part of this audio book was the reader. Her voice was flat and her intonations often seemed inappropriate. I would avoid this reader in future purchases.

Ms. Setter field is a masterful story-teller. Each chapter built upon the one before, building anticipation for the rest of the story. Equally to the story, so was the narrator. I can’t imagine reading it after listening to this performance. I will listen again.

The mix of historic fact and imaginative fiction based on fact is masterfully blended in this book. The reality of the cruel torture of slavery is exposed in this story of inhuman strength to survive and stay free in mind while enslaved in body. I have long said that the strength of people of color if demonstrate in the reality that anyone survived the institution of slavery. This is an amazing story of strength and changes of heart. I think everyone should read this. This writing has challenged me to look deeper into the history on which this book is based.

This is one of the author’s earlier works and the information is so very good. After I finished, I wanted more! I would love to sit with Dr. Brown and have a conversation over cup of tea. What gifts her curiosity and research results are.

Although I said the performance was five star, and it is, I do miss Dr. Brown’s voice. I listened to another book that she read herself and so that voice is in my head.

This was such a good listen in every way. I thought I had figured out where the story would end, but I did not! The ending surprised me and made the whole story so much better than I imagined. The performance was wonderful and the author’s references to history anchored the story so well. I may just listen to this again and certainly will recommend it.

I enjoyed the story very much and the performance was very good. However...the author’s use of adverbs left something to be desired. Tiredly, shakely, to name two. It became very annoying and demonstrated a lack of creativity. This was disappointing.

The story is compelling and well presented. It is, however, the performance that makes this an outstanding listen. The change in accents and voices for each part was flawless.

I have read a great deal about the Holocaust out of respect for those who lost their lives. I read this for the same reason: to honor those who lost their lives in countless ways because their skin happened to be a dark color. The author did a masterful job of choosing the material that at times made me weep at the matter of fact demeanor of the description of a lynching, brutal torture, and demeaning of the human soul in a person of color. I was ignorant of the Great Migration before reading this book. That any person of color survived is the miracle.
