On his last combat deployment, Lt. Cmdr. James Reece's entire team was killed in an ambush that also claimed the lives of the aircrew sent in to rescue them. But when those dearest to him are murdered on the day of his homecoming, Reece discovers that this was not an act of war by a foreign enemy but a conspiracy that runs to the highest levels of government. Now, with no family and free from the military's command structure, Reece applies the lessons that he's learned in over a decade of constant warfare toward revenge.

Daniel Graham MacCormick - Mac for short - seems to have a pretty good life. At age 35 he's living in Key West, owner of a 42-foot charter fishing boat, The Maine. Mac served five years in the army as an infantry officer, with two tours in Afghanistan. He returned with the Silver Star, two Purple Hearts, scars that don't tan, and a boat with a big bank loan. Truth be told, Mac's finances are more than a little shaky. One day Mac is sitting in the famous Green Parrot Bar in Key West, contemplating his life....

The only book from this author that I couldn't finish. I had to just put it away. Maybe I like the John Corey persona too much?

Frank Machianno is a late-middle-aged ex-surf bum who runs a bait shack on the San Diego waterfront. An affable Italian with a love of people and life, he's a stand-up businessman, devoted father, and a beloved fixture in the community. He's also a hit man - specifically, a retired hit man. Back in the day when he was one of the most feared members of the West Coast Mafia, he was known as Frankie Machine.

Would you consider the audio edition of The Winter of Frankie Machine to be better than the print version?

I only purchased the audio version and it was damn good! Wish there were other books with Frankie Machine in it.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Winter of Frankie Machine?

There were several, but if I go into details, it gives part of the story away.

What does Dennis Boutsikaris bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I loved his performance. Very real. Will look into other audio books he narrates.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Towards the end, butI do not want to give anything away.

Any additional comments?

One of the most entertaining books you will ever listen to. I read other reviews where they complained about the story going into the character's past, but I feel its vital for background on Frankie Machine. It did not bother me in the least. LOVED this book and wish there were others with Frankie Machine in it.

Dick Thornby is not Hollywood's idea of a spy. In his rough and tumble job there are no tailored Italian suits, no bimbos eager to please, and no massive underground fortresses built by evil overlords seeking world domination - just an endless series of sinister threats to the safety and security of the billions of mundane citizens of the planet. Sure, Dick's tough and he knows a few tricks to help him get out of a tight spot, even if his boss accuses him of over-reliance on an abundance of explosives.

Not looking like it right now.

What was most disappointing about Donald J. Bingle’s story?

The plot!

How did the narrator detract from the book?

His voice. I thought it was a whimsical grandfather telling a tale.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

Sorry. I couldnt finish it. Got 1/2 way thru and that was an accomplishment.

In this magnificent novel, Charles McCarry returns to the world of his legendary character Paul Christopher—the savvy intelligence agent as skilled at choosing a fine wine as he is at tradecraft, at once sophisticated and dangerous, and no stranger to the world of dirty tricks. Now Paul Christopher has mysteriously disappeared. But a group of his retired colleagues - the “Old Boys” from the Outfit - refuse to believe Christopher is dead.

Would you try another book from Charles McCarry and/or Stefan Rudnicki?

I might consider another from this author but Mr Rudnicki's voice overwhems the storyline.

What do you think your next listen will be?

I just erased Old Boys from my Kindle and downloaded Scarecrow by Matthew Reilly.

How could the performance have been better?

The narrator's voice distracted me from the plot. I had to go back a few times.

What character would you cut from Old Boys?
