This book was good, and that’s the problem. From all the amazed reviews I was seeing, I was expecting something... more. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed this one immensely, but there were others I had been hoping it would rival for bizarre beauty and deep meaning. It was a cool story, but I don’t think it will be staying with me for long. It was good enough.

For 20 years, the Palomas and the Corbeaus have been rivals and enemies, locked in an escalating feud for over a generation. Both families make their living as traveling performers in competing shows - the Palomas swimming in mermaid exhibitions, the Corbeaus, former tightrope walkers, performing in the tallest trees they can find. Lace Paloma may be new to her family's show, but she knows as well as anyone that the Corbeaus are pure magia negra - black magic from the devil himself.

There are two reasons this book didn’t make it to my “DNF” list: the first is that I bought it during a 2-for-1 sale and so didn’t pay for it. The second it that where I couldn’t make it anymore, there were only two hours left. The fact that the characters had literal scales and feathers wasn’t super clear right up front and that caused confusion. The author was also super hung up on Lace’s bare breasts, which I didn’t find appropriate in reference to a 16 year old girl. The writing... was fine, I guess. It wasn’t inspiring, but it wasn’t terrible. It was just meh.

I really enjoyed this one. It wasn’t nearly as good as the first two and the ending was underwhelming, but it was a solid conclusion and I’d read any more stories Sanderson threw our way (if he ever did). There was a frustrating lack of explanation for everything as well, but it was still good all things considered.

I thought almost as soon as it began, “Nope. No way I’m going to enjoy this.” My love for Shannon Hale and the embarrassment of returning two books in one day kept me listening, and I am so very glad I did. The full cast was excellent (if a little too robotic a times), and the story was the toe-curling, giddy ride Hale so excels at. If you’re not sure you can make it 5+ hours of journal format and randomly-interspersed singing, keep going. You might be surprised with what you find.

This story and performance is phenomenal. I mean, gripping-your-seat-and-staring-blankly-into-space-so-don’t-listen-and-drive good. My ONLY pet peeve (and this will not bother most) is the casual use of the “F” word. I can’t stand that. There is a time and place and I feel like it was used way more than necessary for the story. It ruins it a little every time it’s thrown around. I don’t curse, and I don’t mind cursing... to a degree.

I have seen a lot of complaints about the fact that there are seven narrators. For me, that was a treat. It helped keep track of whose point of view we were on, and they were all (with one exception) excellent narrators. My only problem was the voice of Jesper. The narrator enunciated. Every. Single. Word. To death. Jesper was one of my favorite characters, witty and sharp. But that narration... he sucked all the fun out of it.
