Former Navy Air Rescue swimmer Brian Dickinson was roughly 1,000 feet from the summit of Mount Everest, also known as "the death zone", when his Sherpa became ill and had to turn back, leaving Brian with a difficult decision: Should he continue to push for the summit or head back down the mountain? After carefully weighing the options, Brian decided to continue toward the summit, alone. Four hours later, Brian solo summited the highest peak in the world. But the celebration was short lived.

One fateful starless night, 17-year-old Ira Wagler got up at 2 AM, left a scribbled note under his pillow, packed all of his earthly belongings into in a little black duffel bag, and walked away from his home in the Amish settlement of Bloomfield, Iowa. Now, in this heartwarming memoir, Ira paints a vivid portrait of Amish life - from his childhood days on the family farm, his Rumspringa rite of passage at age 16, to his ultimate decision to leave the Amish Church for good at age 26.

I love this story and this man's heart. I can relate to his story even though I grew up in France Catholic and moving to the USA and giving my heart to Jesus in my early 30's. It's a story about the heart of man and being loved by God and loving God in spite of all man's rules and regulations.

"Il y avait sûrement en 1942 des après-midi où la guerre et l'Occupation semblaient lointaines et irréelles. Sauf pour une jeune fille du nom d'Hélène Berr, qui savait qu'elle était au plus profond du malheur et de la barbarie ; mais impossible de le dire aux passants aimables et indifférents. Alors, elle écrivait un journal. Avait-elle le pressentiment que très loin dans l'avenir, on le lirait ?" Patrick Modiano

I had to return the book because of the music at the beginning of each chapter. I have this book in English too and just love this lady's heart. She is a real hero to me! I also love the narrator both in French and English (I am from France) highly recommend this book. I put in a request for audiobooks to remove the music because I use these audiobooks to get to sleep at night and music wakes me up. Insomnia issues - works better than any sleeping pills for me! 😀

In 1987, Dr. Benjamin Carson gained worldwide recognition for his part in the first successful separation of Siamese twins joined at the back of the head. The extremely complex and delicate operation, five months in the planning and twenty-two hours in the execution, involved a surgical plan that Carson helped initiate. Carson pioneered again in a rare procedure known as hemispherectomy, giving children without hope a second chance at life through a daring operation in which he literally removed one half of their brain.

A gorgeous, moving memoir of how one of America's most innovative and respected journalists found his voice by coming to terms with a painful past. New York Times columnist Charles M. Blow mines the compelling poetry of the out-of-time African-American Louisiana town where he grew up - a place where slavery's legacy was felt astonishingly close, reverberating in the elders' stories and in the near-constant wash of violence.

The dramatic autobiography of one of China's dedicated, courageous, and intensely persecuted house church leaders. This is the gripping story of how God took a young, half-starved boy from a poor village in Henan province and placed him on the front line for Jesus, in the face of impossible odds. Instead of focusing on the many miracles or experiences of suffering, however, Yun prefers to focus on the character and beauty of Jesus.
