Not real complicated, a straight forward strumming on the nostaglia guitar. Not literature but entertaining nonetheless.

The weltanshaung of Weimar Germany was captured well here. the story narrative was a bit thin and clumsy.

An engaging novel that was enjoyable to follow. At times ,though,it became difficult to suspend disbelief.

I've never been a big fan of Roth. Seems like his need to be clever and unfiltered is a bit too evident in many of his books. He appears to be going for self-aggrandizement, self-promotion, at the expense of narrative and the "inner truths" guiding human existence. But, of course, we're all like that sometimes. Hell, even I plead guilty to going off in that self-absorbed direction every once in awhile.

I can now say I've read every one of Doig's novels and his two memoirs. I am proud to have been a fellow Northwestern alum.

Thanks.

As the son of a WW2 vet this book was more than a but of history to me. A great love story, happy, sad, wondrous and then some!!

Haven't been there and may never visit that City of Copper but no matter, I've lived there now for a week or two and so, will henceforth think of myself as a true Buttean. And I'd suggest you do too.

While I've never actually set foot in that copper-tinged town I now feel that I've been there and lived there and more.

Wow!
