What’s not to love about a story you can become totally absorbed in?

I particularly loved the resonance of the different characters, in terms of their language differences. It was only the latter part of the story, during the heist, that I could imagine them more fully (that for me was a bit of a downside). Having said that, it’s so hard to pick a favourite character from the team - but the colourful language of Stills was some of the funniest cursing sequences I’ve ever heard. I loved them! Marie was amazing and much of her persona was given greater depth by T. Ryder Smith.

If you want pace, this is for you. If you like the idea of the Ocean’s Eleven series crossed with Mission Impossible but on a galactic stage, this is for you.

I gave this performance rating because ... T. Ryder Smith is an outstanding storyteller, reading this as the fast paced, energized story it is, but still left additional urgency for the climax. A thrill to listen to.

I gave this story rating because ... If you think hard sci-fi is emotionally barren - THINK AGAIN! It’s science, yes; be prepared to laugh out loud, frown at some worldly atrocities, embrace the weird, and sealed with a kiss. Impossible - right? No: Derek Kunsken, is, a true magician of story.

Overall, I was totally absorbed, and I can’t wait to find out if the story continues.

I loved this book's main story, which was yet again filled with imagination. But this book also has a lovely way of rounding off Blackthorn and Grim's troublesome past.
I didn't enjoy the idea that a story so rounded might mean the end of the series - please, no!
I'm really hoping Blackthorn & Grim will simply enter a new phase of uncanny detections.
I recommend Blackthorn & Grim to anyone that enjoys magical soothing and the romance of true enduring love that has a slow but steady build.
I will hope and look for another in this series. Bravo!

Would you listen to The Final Empire again? Why?

Yes! I will read it again, it's brilliant. You become part of the story world and have to know what happens. There's so much detail, I know I will notice new things next time.

What did you like best about this story?

The story is completely original and I love the trust theme. I love this book for so many reasons it is hard to name just one. The character growth is very interesting, for example.

Have you listened to any of Michael Kramer’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Yes I've listened to Michael Kramer's before. And part of why I wanted to get this book was because Michael brings the characters to life. Michael and Brandon are an amazing combination. I'm following the Way of Kings series. I listen to them over and over - they're big books and awesome detail.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes I wanted to listen to this in one sitting, but I have a family and it's not possible. I have the hard copy and I had so much to get done at home getting ready for our driving holiday that I couldn't sit to read. Naughty, I know, but I started straight off with the extra audio books I purchased for my hols. It's tricky to take hard copies now the weight restrictions are a bother. I listened to five large novels on my driving holiday and didn't have to worry about e-reading in the car making me feel sick.

Any additional comments?

'The Final Empire' is a must read! I couldn't wait for my credit when I arrived home and had to read the next one (hard copy). I started the day I returned from hols. two days later my audio credit was in and just in time, too! I had to know what happened next. Listening to the third book in the series made the huge washing pile actually enjoyable! Each book has great resolution, but I just wanted more!!!

Even better second time round!

Would you consider the audio edition of Medalon to be better than the print version?

I haven't seen the print version. However, this reader adds to the feel of the story and manages many voices that are extremely credible.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Tarja. (The main male character.)I like that he is fair, honourable, and prepared to stand up for what he believes in. Many people talk of the latter, but few in life actually stand by their beliefs. Even when Tarja finds his love is Harshini and not human, it doesn't change how he feels about her.

Which scene was your favorite?

My favourite scene is when Tarja sees the trees cover the bodies of the defenders following them, resulting from Braks call for help from the god of living things. Tarja doesn't become a believer in the gods, but he does start to accept what he thought impossible. A great scene!

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Not at first. But after the first half an hour I struggled to find enough jobs to do so that I could keep listening. It took me three days. I kept my sessions as treats, but in the end I couldn't focus on what I was doing and had to finish the story.

Any additional comments?

I love that we were given the first chapter of the next story at the end of this audio book. I won't be happy until I have heard or read all of these stories.
