Alcatraz Smedry doesn't seem destined for anything but disaster. On his 13th birthday, he receives a bag of sand, and his life takes a bizarre turn. This is no ordinary bag of sand...so it's too bad that Alcatraz doesn't keep a closer eye on it. It is quickly stolen by the Evil Librarians who secretly rule the world by spreading misinformation and suppressing truth. The bag of sand will give the Evil Librarians the edge thy need to achieve world domination.

My 10 year old son and his best friend think this (and its sequel) are the funniest book(s) ever. I find the narrator a bit condescending and snarky (which does fit the main character). It is very self-referential. I've both read and listened to the book - the read is better.

BUT I like the premise and my son really, really loves it.

The best audio over

I have listened to audio books for many years. In my opinion, this is the single best recording of all time. It combines a gentle, funny, and poignant story with a quiet, understated, but brilliant reader. E.B. White reads his own work in his slow Maine accent. I have heard this recording dozens of times over the years with my children, and it never fails to bring tears to my eyes.

I first had this book to read to me by the second grade teacher in 1966. I am still listening to it and it is still fresh to me and to my children. You can't go wrong with this one.

A journey of 167,000 lights years begins with...a bar of soap? Fasten your zero gravity restraints for Robert Heinlein's novel of intergalactic adventure, a story that carries teenager Clifford "Kip" Russell from his job as soda jerk to space-suit winner to alien abductee! Along the way Kip is joined by a pint-sized genius named Peewee and an empathetic alien creature known as "the Mother Thing."

I listened to this piece with my 8 year old and we both had a great time. What it lacks in great plot structure, it makes up for in good characters and fun factoids. The 9 year old girl genius with the dirty dolly was a pleasure. My son has enjoyed all of Heinlein's 'boys' books, although none have been as fun as The Rolling Stones.
