Bodyguard: Ransom is a bulletproof thriller by Chris Bradford, best-selling author of the Young Samurai books. It's Lee Child for younger readers--Cherub meets Jason Bourne, a surefire winner for fans of Robert Muchamore and Anthony Horowitz's Alex Rider books. Connor Reeves is a bodyguard, trained in surveillance, anti-ambush technique, hostage survival, and unarmed combat. He's already proven himself by saving the American president's daughter from terrorists in Bodyguard: Hostage.

When you are a young teen privileged to go to a truce meeting with the goblin king, do not start the meeting by insulting him several times.

The "genius" Sophie and friends act like they know better than the adults, but they DON'T.

These books are still fun to listen to.

The council seemed rather incompetent in this book.
Also, Sophie spent so much time just "planning" with her friends in her room. She spent scenes separately telling Dex and Keethe and Fitz and Biana all her secrets and what she knew about the Black Swan and Neverseen. I wanted action or try-fail cycles. Still, it was interesting to read anyway. So, it was well done.

Then, everything changed when the fire nation attacked. I mean when the everblaze sparked in the second half of the book.

I do think the millennia-old elves should be wiser or nicer or have better plans than they do, though. For a society of ancients, they get flustered easily and don't anticipate the right troubles. None of the elves act as old as they are supposed to be.

Twelve-year-old Sophie has never quite fit into her life. She’s skipped multiple grades and doesn’t really connect with the older kids at school, but she’s not comfortable with her family, either. The reason? Sophie’s a Telepath, someone who can read minds. No one knows her secret - at least, that’s what she thinks.... But the day Sophie meets Fitz, a mysterious (and adorable) boy, she learns she’s not alone. He’s a Telepath too, and it turns out the reason she has never felt at home is that, well...she isn’t. Fitz opens Sophie’s eyes to a shocking truth....

I didn't like that the book kept emphasizing how much of a genius Sophie and the other elves were. They didn't act like geniuses. It took her too long to think about her family and too long to put clues together. The elf children at the school didn't act like elite, talented beings who would live forever. They acted like middle schoolers with drama and pranks and complaining about studying.
Other than that, no problems. I loved that Sophie actually got in trouble when she did something wrong (like using telepathy to cheat!), and I love that she confessed and was tempted to misuse her abilities and kept trying to involve adults despite them keeping secrets.

I just love that these characters think about their choices before making stupid mistakes. Trynne has a lot of tough decisions before her, but she never acts rashly. I can feel how hard it is for her to do some of these things (conduct a funeral, not fall in love, trust a betrayer, and kill someone in cold blood). My heart reacts when hers does. Amazing job.
