Many consider this rich social commentary to be Jane Austen's finest novel. It is certainly among her more famous ones. Austen sets her entertaining study of manners and misconceptions against the backdrop of a class-conscious society in 18th century England.

When her father remarries, the honest, innocent Molly Gibson suddenly finds herself with a new stepsister, Cynthia, who is beautiful, worldly and impetuous. This would be more than enough to deal with, but the new wife is the deeply snobbish (and darkly secretive) Hyacinth. Thwarted love, scheming ambition and small-town gossip underlie the warmth, irony and brilliant social observation which link the relationships and the inevitable conflicts as profound change comes to rural England.

overall a good book, that follows the story of Three Sisters as a visit there long lost mother in Oakland California. They become familiar with the Black Panthers, and they aren't what they expect. the only thing I don't like about it is it never gives the other side of the coin. So they paint police officers, white people, and society as their enemy. it still has a victim, racist viewpoint.
