Professor Theo Cray caught one of the most prolific serial killers in history using revolutionary scientific methods. Cut off from university research because of the shroud of suspicion around him after the death of his former student and the aftermath of catching his quarry, Cray tries to rebuild his life but finds himself drawn into another unsolved case. The desperate father of a missing child, ignored by the authorities and abandoned by his community, turns to Theo for help. The only clues are children's drawings and an inner-city urban legend about someone called the Toy Man.

Sam Parker is a vampire with a gift so strong and substantial that she is invited to partake in a test for a place in the Grand High Master Vampire's private army. She finds that not only has the army never included a woman, but it has never included a Svente vampire; a breed that is regarded by the super strong Pagori breed and the hypnotically beautiful Keja breed to be too tame and human-like.

In the end, Jared doesn't change. He's still a sexist, and his 'love' for Sam isn't based on respect, but lust. I find his character to be repulsive even, and no self-respecting woman like Sam would ever allow herself to be owned by a sexist butthole like Jared. I found the character development to be very weak and the final battle at the end was rushed. There were a couple more chapters of words that could have been included to really make the world and the characters better, but they were left out. The intimate scenes weren't very exciting, and Jared's disrespect for Sam is highlighted in these scenes. Overall, I thought this book was poirly written and instead of being lost in a romance, I was distracted by all the sexism taking place.

This is the way the world ends. For the last time. A season of endings has begun. It starts with the great, red rift across the heart of the world's sole continent, spewing ash that blots out the sun. It starts with death, with a murdered son and a missing daughter. It starts with betrayal and long-dormant wounds rising up to fester. This is the Stillness, a land long familiar with catastrophe, where the power of the Earth is wielded as a weapon. And where there is no mercy.

Dina DeMille may run the nicest Bed and Breakfast in Red Deer, Texas, but she caters to a very particular kind of guest...the kind that no one on Earth is supposed to know about. Guests like a former intergalactic tyrant with an impressive bounty on her head, the Lord Marshal of a powerful vampire clan, and a displaced-and-superhot werewolf; so don't stand too close, or you may be collateral damage.

I've got all Ilona Andrew's books on print, so this is the first time I've heard this author, and I have to say in hate her. She sounds old, her voice for Dina is high pitched, I find her inflection of tone to be off with the intention of the authors, and when she made Helen's "growling" sound I about fell put of my chair. The narrator makes Dina sound weak and I just couldn't get into her performance.

Anything by Ilona Andrew's is the absolute best and the story itself is phenomenal, but I'll never listen to another book narrated by this narrator ever again.

So, I didn't listen to this book for the longest time since I'd read mixed reviews, but I think this book was very well written. The issues between Rune and Dragos are disappointing, but they stay true to character and story. I really, truly felt the depth of devotion and love between Carling and Rune, and it made this book delightful to read. The author also perfectly set up the next book as well, without it feeling like the next boring piece in a line of available characters. Listening to Oracle's Moon immediately after Serpent's Kiss.
