When companies face key strategic decisions, they often take one path and abandon the other. They focus on innovation and new business at the expense of core businesses, or vice versa. They stress discipline and sacrifice flexibility. They focus on customers and ignore partners. And they struggle. Cisco believes there is a better way: Doing Both, which means approaching every decision as an opportunity to seize, not a sacrifice to endure.

This book is a collection of essays written about the principles behind David Allen's personal organization system. It's worth going into them but the listener should probably listen to his other book "Getting Things Done" before listening to this one.

A good source of informaiton on Google

Overall
3 out of 5 stars

Reviewed: 01-18-06

The authors did a competent job of presenting how Google rose to be the company it is today and where it is heading. However, there seems to be a strong bias in the way the story was told. The authors put the Google founders on a pedestal, interpreting events in such a way as to paint them as extraordinarily brillant forces of good, changing the rules of business, pervailing against vulture capitalists, greedy investment bankers and the evil Microsoft, and generally making the world a better place for mankind. Nevertheless, a good source of information for those interested in Google.

This fresh and original work illuminates such key principles as karma (what we do does matter), rebirth (every moment is an opportunity to start afresh), letting go (simplifying our lives by clarifying our hearts and minds), as well as conscious living and dying, and Dzogchen, the ultimate, mystical teaching of Tibet.

A basic introduction to Buddhism

Overall
3 out of 5 stars

Reviewed: 01-18-06

Lama Surya Das describes the basic teachings of Buddhism, covering the four noble truths and the eightfold path. He focused on the "what" but does not touch sufficiently on the "why" and "how". For instance, he says "walk like the Buddha, talk like the Buddha" but leaves the listener wondering how a Buddha would walk and talk.

This book gives easy to follow, step-by-step instructions on David Allen's task organizing system. I implemented the system and find that it works really well. Learning this system does require a little bit of effort and discipline but I think it was worth it. I recommend this for anyone who is serious about getting organized and staying on top of things.

The Success Priniciples

Overall
3 out of 5 stars

Reviewed: 12-17-05

Jack Canfield seems to have collected all the success principles ever taught and put them all in one book. He provides useful examples to illustrate each principle. The book has a website that provides additional support material. This is a good audiobook to listen to but I give it a lower rating as many of the principles were left out in this abridged version. In order to get the full benefit, you will have to purchase the book.
