Darrow is a Red, a member of the lowest caste in the color-coded society of the future. Like his fellow Reds, he works all day, believing that he and his people are making the surface of Mars livable for future generations. Yet he spends his life willingly, knowing that his blood and sweat will one day result in a better world for his children. But Darrow and his kind have been betrayed. Soon he discovers that humanity reached the surface generations ago. Vast cities and sprawling parks spread across the planet.

This books didn't truly grab my attention until there were only three hours left. The main character does too much narration. He is telling you about events that happen rather than having the reader experience the story in real time. I understand there are parts that need to be sped up to keep the pace of the book, but I was disengaged from the other characters and the story line for a majority of the book.

I was disappointed with the storyline in this book, especially because The Girl With all the Gifts was one of my favorite books last year. This book never really hooked my interest. There was too much unnecessary backstory with the characters, and they were never fully fleshed out. I think it could have been another amazing book M. R. Carey, but it fell flat.

For five centuries, a witch's curse has bound the trolls to their city beneath the ruins of Forsaken Mountain. Time enough for their dark and nefarious magic to fade from human memory and into myth. But a prophesy has been spoken of a union with the power to set the trolls free, and when Ccile de Troyes is kidnapped and taken beneath the mountain, she learns there is far more to the myth of the trolls than she could have imagined.

The narrator has a very odd vocal pattern and the words she stresses makes everything sound like a question. It detracts from the story line which is very engaging. I listened to the story at 1.25 speed which helped overcome some of the narration problems.
