Since his return from war, the Duke of Ashbury's to-do list has been short and anything but sweet: brooding, glowering, menacing London ne'er-do-wells by night. Now there's a new item on the list. He needs an heir - which means he needs a wife. When Emma Gladstone, a vicar's daughter turned seamstress, appears in his library wearing a wedding gown, he decides on the spot that she'll do.

Most debutantes dream of finding husbands. Lady Pandora Ravenel has different plans. The ambitious young beauty would much rather stay at home and plot out her new board game business than take part in the London Season. But one night at a glittering society ball, she's ensnared in a scandal with a wickedly handsome stranger.

I actually laughed out loud multiple times during this book. It is by far the best in the series so far. Like the others the sex is too much for me and I fast forwarded through a great deal of the story. The hero seemed to go from never gonna marry to I have to marry now too fast. Made the story seem odd at that point. But the overall story was much better than the first 2.

The story line is great. Performance is excellent. The heroine goes from blushing virgin to vixen so fast and made it so easy for the hero that it made the story lose appeal to me. The sex scenes are the main detractor. Too long, numerous and explicit for me. I found myself fast forwarding multiple times to get to the end of it all.

This story moved slower than molasses in January because the author chose to detail every fleeting thought of the main characters. I have read her books in the past and enjoyed them but maybe I skimmed thru the tedious scenes previously. The heroine vacillated between incredibly stupid to brilliance. Awful overall.

When Thomas Jefferson became president in 1801, America faced a crisis. The new nation was deeply in debt and needed its economy to grow quickly, but its merchant ships were under attack. Pirates from North Africa's Barbary coast routinely captured American sailors and held them as slaves, demanding ransom and tribute payments far beyond what the new country could afford.
