Excellent writing. Awful content. As always, Susan Erickson is in top form. If rape and torture make you upset. Stay away.

First: A lot of discussing the pros and cons of folklore, religion and politics. The author seems to have a need to get his beliefs off of his chest.
Some politically incorrect speech and views, but not for the date in which the story takes place. Yet, sometimes words and phrases are from present time.
Second: Holmes has given up cocaine for hashish.
Third: Holmes talks about his sex life!
Last: The basic story is quite good and interesting. Just be prepared for a lot of the characters' (the author's) views peppered between the beginning and end.
The reader was very good. One star off for a "very" few mispronounced words.

But, you have to wait 7 hours before Allyn makes his appearance. You will definitely know all the characters well.

If you've read Stoker's Dracula you will recognize what can only be described as shameless stealing of whole sections of Bram's story. Just substitute Watson for Jonathan Harper at the castle. A monk for several other characters. Holmes, of course, is Van Helsing. If this is an homage it is well done. I have to admit I enjoyed recognizing each blatant robbery. The narrator seemed hesitant at first but was much better as the story progressed.

Once you can get by the rather "strange if not wildly weird " premise of this story it is a good Sherlock Holmes adventure .

Narrator speaks well except for Holmes' voice . He lowers the pitch of his voice which is fine, unfortunately, he also lowers the volume of his voice as well. The only way to hear the stories clearly is to up the volume on your machine. Meaning the other characters voices are a bit loud. Note: there is to a low level knocking sound that seems to be caused by the transfer of the stories from tapes. This is only heard when the sound is turned up. Actually, it is easily ignored as you get caught up in the stories.

Would you listen to The Shrieking Pits again? Why?

Probably . Watson is definitely long winded to the point you will just want him to get on with the story which ends up being interesting.

Who was your favorite character and why?

The Japanese lady warrior. A very different character for a Sherlock Holmes story.

Which scene was your favorite?

The final face off with the villains.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The young man's history.

Any additional comments?

Don't be fooled by the title. This is not about fairy folk.
