Meet Ove. He's a curmudgeon - the kind of man who points at people he dislikes as if they were burglars caught outside his bedroom window. He has staunch principles, strict routines, and a short fuse. People call him "the bitter neighbor from hell". But behind the cranky exterior there is a story and a sadness.

This book is nothing like the vast majority of the fast paced adventure or high drama books that I love. I very likely would never have picked this book except for the fantastic reviews without a single negative review posted. So I gave it a try. Wow. The story and character development is fantastic. I was hooked in the first few pages. The performance was incredible. Every voice different and perfect every time. The emotion came through clearly and wrapped itself around me all the way through. This is a very good read.

For a while this story seems flat. At first interesting, but then, not so much. It seems like the author was setting up the characters before the 'plot thickens', but then you realize it doesn't thicken. There is a lot of story telling - it is a recollection - but with little change in scene or action.
In essence. this is a drama that reflects much of what is unfortunately the American family of today. It is an inside story of what we all too often see around us each day. I kept waiting for something to be not so familiar, for something to give the story a kick. There is No kick.
But don't stop listening. Though there isn't an exciting 'kick' and you might start thinking about tanking this listen it suddenly seems to get a shove in the right direction and when that point comes you won't want to stop listening.
Still, even though there is no thunder to reverberate your bones in this story, no seat of the pants page turning excitement, it will take hold of your heart (and isn't that why you read/listen to Nicholas Sparks) and does not let go. The ending makes the whole story worth the listen.

So sad to come to the conclusion of this masterful series. So wonderful how this book developed and worked through all the mysteries, drama, and conclusion. It is hard to say which of the 7 books was the best, but this definitely had plenty of thought provoking mystery, action and suspense, fear and joy. I loved this story. The narrator of this series deserves an award. Amazing how one can be consistent in all the voices of so many characters through so many books that just by voice alone you can identify the speaker even if not mentioned in the text of the story. Each voice really fit the character portrayed, wonderful job.

All five previous books in the Harry Potter series were a stepwise progression of adventure and page turning captivation. This is no different... Well, perhaps it is. The Half Blood Prince is gripping from the very beginning. As Harry and his friends grow and mature from the first book through the 6th so does the adventure grow in risk and wonder.
Like all of these books I am amazed at the consistency of character development for the many within walls of Hogwarts.
As each character develops so does the level of excitement.
This book escalates the suspense until the unexpected climax rips at your heart and imagination. Without spoiling I will say that the last hour of this story will move your emotions like none of the others have.
Get your wand out. A lot comes at you in this adventure and you will need your wand at the ready.
Fast paced with many surprises this saga of Harry Potter and friends won't be easy to pause your listen.
The narration in all of this series is so good you may think you are watching rather than just listening to this epic drama.

America's favorite reality TV stars are everything they seem to be, but this book reveals that there is so much more to this couple. A lot more.
What a wonderfully well put together autobiography read by the people whose lives are shared.
First, the narration is not like someone reading a book about themselves. It is conversational. The story and the narration shared by both Chip and Joanna is captivating. There is so much more character and charm in this couple than the TV show would ever be able to let us know. How they came to be America's favorite is a riveting story I could not stop listening to.
When you see someone on TV doing real life things in what seems like real time you get the feeling that you know them.
Let Chip and Joanna take you on their journey and you will be as awe struck and amazed as I was. You will admire them so much more than you do now and all the while your admiration grows you will be very much entertained.

We have all read the books - I have read them all - twice. How many times have you seen the movies... I won't tell you how many times I did.
This book had been on my wish list for so long and like a long lost friend it called to me to give it just one more listen. So glad I did. Without warning I found myself imagining every detail of this story in 3D. Every place, each event and each unique character was so real in this fantastically well written story.
If you loved Harry Potter when he first came to visit then why not let him in just one more time. You won't be disappointed.

I have the first book about Amos Decker in my wish list and didn't realize I listened to this one out of order. There are many references to the first book that I wondered about, but Mr. Baldacci developed the story and characters quickly so that I didn't feel I missed anything by not reading in order.
The story begins with the FBI bringing together an unusual group of non FBI investigators to form a task force that would tackle cold case crimes. Not all those in the group are happy about the team make up but ultimately the team works well together.

Mr. Brewer's narration made all the male characters individually recognizable. There were no inconsistencies and he was expressive when the plot called for a change in emotion.

Ms Cassidy did not do the same for the female characters. In other books she narrated she was expressive and the character emotion was well played, but not here. I could not distinguish the voices of any of the three women and knew who was speaking only by the plot. There was no excitement or anger in her voice even when the story clearly called for it.
The plot takes many twists and turns as Amos Decker - and the task force - are trying to learn the truth about Melvin Mars a convicted murderer. The plot develops well and I found myself rooting for Mr. Mars.
I think you will enjoy this book, but it would have been better if the female narrator spoke with some emotion.

There is nothing fast paced about this story. There is no death defying action. No terror. No fighting. No race to the finish. What it is, is a simple love story... Well, perhaps simple is not quite right. It is a love story that you will wish you were in. It is a love story that will have your heart on a rollercoaster beating rapidly and never wanting the story to end.
I know I will listen to this one again sometime, but for now I'll wipe the tears off my cheeks and wait for another masterful tale from Mr. Sparks.
If this story does not move you tremendously... well, I am sure it will.

Daniel Graham MacCormick - Mac for short - seems to have a pretty good life. At age 35 he's living in Key West, owner of a 42-foot charter fishing boat, The Maine. Mac served five years in the army as an infantry officer, with two tours in Afghanistan. He returned with the Silver Star, two Purple Hearts, scars that don't tan, and a boat with a big bank loan. Truth be told, Mac's finances are more than a little shaky. One day Mac is sitting in the famous Green Parrot Bar in Key West, contemplating his life....

Nelson DeMille is sort of a cross between Tom Clancy and Nicholas Sparks. He writes with humor and suspense and fits that into each sentence. No paragraph needed to separate the mood. Oh, yes then there is the romance without once dropping the level of suspense.
The main male character reminds me of the character of prior DeMille books, John Connelly. A real man's man and a romantic who while balancing that dichotomy manages to be the lead on an edge of the seat and keep driving suspense drama.
The only thing wrong with Nelson DeMill's books is that there is so many months between new releases.
The Cuban Affair is one of his best. As good and wonderfully enjoyable as the lion series and others.
Get this and you will NOT be disappointed.

Would you listen to Private again? Why?

This book is so perfectly narrated it is worth a second listen.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Jack, well, he was the main character and much revolved around him. He was in control and had a cool exterior, yet we were allowed to see the demons on his inside... that made him very real.

What does Peter Hermann bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Oh, my what fantastic narration. I know my mind would conjure differing voices and personalities, but Mr. Hermann brought every character to life and did so brilliantly.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I would have if I could have, but I am a commuter. So I listen to and from work.

Any additional comments?

My first Patterson and not the last.
