Once every year, in the city of Sunja, gladiators meet within the arena known as Sunja's Pit. Some men enter for the lure of fortune, some for the fame, and some simply for the fight. The games continue for days until a champion is finally crowned. Or until all involved perish. Four companions struggle to change their lives in and out of the arena as it becomes clear that to be a Free Trained pit fighter is to live with a mark on one's head.

There are only two like able characters and the author treats them as morons and belittles them. The person set up to be the ultimate protagonist is a gladiator that can’t fight, makes the worst decisions and somehow feels superior and becomes the boss of better people and fighters.

Can’t co tinge the rest of the books because this one treated the main characters so poorly.

Writing was very good and vivid. Narrator is fantastic. Character development is great, but plot and use of characters is appalling and off putting.

Welcome to the Five Isles, where war has come in the name of the invading army of Sor Sevier, a merciless host driven by the prophetic fervor of the Angel Prince, Aeros, toward the last unconquered kingdom of Gul Kana. Yet Gault, one of the elite Knights Archaic of Sor Sevier, is growing disillusioned by the crusade he is at the vanguard of just as it embarks on his Lord Aeros' greatest triumph. While the eldest son of the fallen king of Gul Kana now reigns in ever increasing paranoid isolationism, his two sisters seek their own paths.

If life has taught the jaded sellsword Aaron Envelar anything, it’s that hope is for fools and causes are a sure remedy for breathing. But when his latest job leads him to the corpse of a prince and a conspiracy that threatens to destroy the entire realm, Aaron is forced to choose sides in a war he doesn’t want, between forces he doesn’t understand. What is up with this trend of incompetent protagonists?

It seems like there is a trend recently for all the protagonists to just “Forest Gump” their way through the story. I loved the movie, but come on. Why does every hero have to bumble his/her way through life while supposedly being the best “put title here” ever. I’m really tired of this theme.

This book has great characters and great story but the author’s insistence on making every decision by the characters turn into a great struggle, the fact that the most accomplished wizard never can do any magic and everyone loses every fight just to luck their way out gets very tiresome and just leaves you feeling frustrated. This is the first time I wished for an abridged version of any book because it could be so good but unfortunately is not.
