Alex Duncan is a mother, a sister - and the daughter of a doomsday prepper. She always thought her father was insane, raving about an apocalypse she never believed in, but when a plague hits the United States and the dead no longer stay dead, Alex discovers heeding her deceased father’s advice is what will keep her family alive. Before he died, Alex’s father created a compound in Montana just in case situations like this arose. The dead walk, hungry for human flesh. With little time to spare, Alex must make split-second decisions to prevent her family from being devoured.

The majority of post apocalyptic prepper books typically deal with EMPs, and most zombie books don’t have preppers. This book combines the 2. This author does a great job developing the characters and focuses on multiple family dynamics that Is refreshing.

Also, there are a lot of post apocalyptic books that are only 5-7 hrs, but this one is over 10, so I get my moneys worth.

The narrator does a great job with her voices, especially with the kids.

DOWNSIDE - I have to wait for the next book to come out.

The storyline and idea for the book is really good. The pros about this book is that it shows a variety of perspectives from multiple characters and unlike other books, not everybody is a prepper rather it shows the average person in this postapocalyptic scenario. The cons of this book is that it doesn’t dive deep enough into the emotions and seriousness of what’s going on, it goes too fast on something’s and too slow on others. SPOILER.... The hikers, the ambush, and Jorge‘s trip to Orlando went too fast and left out a lot of things. When Cramer and his friend were almost executed was a good emotional representation, but they got over it too quickly and didn’t take the opportunity to show his wife’s or daughter’s reactions to what happened it just moved onto the next thing. John getting Maria out of the fairgrounds was too quick and easy. The boat trip was too easy and needed more drama. The storyline is great but it’s too fast and missed opportunities to show the drama and emotions of the situation. It’s been over a year and still wear his book 2?

Lauren Russell, her family, and the community of Trout Run Valley had been blessed with a workable blueprint for overcoming nearly insurmountable odds - odds that had been surmounted against them, and others like them, since the blackout, subsequent decline of society, and the world's devolution. The aftermath of the most recent onslaught, a ruthless attack by a menacing enemy, had left them reeling in its wake, leaving a once-sustainable food supply damaged beyond repair and two of their own senselessly murdered.

I love this series, but I expect each book in the series to have some form of closure; this book has a “to be continued....” ending, so I REALLY am not happy about that.
