Apprentice in Death audiobook cover art

Eve has to work very fast to save intended victims

Overall
5 out of 5 stars
Performance

Story

Reviewed: 09-09-16

Would you listen to Apprentice in Death again? Why?

Yes. JD Robb includes so much action in her novels, I always miss some of the action and clues. I love listening to all her novels again. In Apprentice she refers to some new characters introduced in recent novels. I am listening again to Festive in Death where she introduces her new uniform officer.

What did you like best about this story?

Eve becomes even more pleased with Roarke's help in this story. She becomes closer to Sommerset. Eve works again with the S.W.A.T team. She gets her Christmas gift from Roarke and loves it. She has to deal with Bella at her 1st Birthday party.

Which scene was your favorite?

I love the humor and tenderness when Eve has to interact with Bella, especially after dealing with a homicidal teenager. The differences are profound.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I had to force myself to stop listening after about 2/3 of the novel so that I could still have part of the book to enjoy on a second day. I resent waiting 6 months for the release of the next In Death book, so I always make myself stretch out the current book as long as possible which is usually 2 days. I will listen again within a week.

Any additional comments?

I really believe that Apprentice In Death is the best Eve Dallas book to date. The action was non-stop. The interaction with all of her friends was very endearing. Loved it.

I have not read the previous books, but Targeted held my interest throughout the book and I will try the earlier books in the series. Unfortunately the suspense did not begin until the last few chapters.

If you could sum up The Perks of Being a Wallflower in three words, what would they be?

Charlie's coming of age.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Perks of Being a Wallflower?

Remembrance of suppressed memory which really impacted Charlie's childhood.

What about Noah Galvin’s performance did you like?

Very sympathetic reading without being overly dramatic. I felt like I knew Charlie personally.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The moment of Charlie's great revelation of cause of childhood trauma.

Any additional comments?

I love how Patrick and Sam took Charlie under their wings and guided him through his first high school years.

Would you consider the audio edition of Wild Sky to be better than the print version?

I think the Audible edition is excellent especially being read by one of the authors. Melanie Brockmann is an excellent narrator. She is never too dramatic which is the problem with too many narrators. I haven't read the print version of this book.

What other book might you compare Wild Sky to and why?

Wild Night is a great sequel to Night Sky which I listened to again before I listened to Wild Sky. Since there was such a long time between the publishing dates, reading the books together really demonstrates how well they support each other.

Have you listened to any of Melanie Brockmann’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

She reads both of the Night Sky books excellently. I will have to check out any other books she may have narrated.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

When one of the main characters was accidentally injected with the killer drug, I became very stressed. The anxiety continued to increase through the remainder of the book.

Any additional comments?

I highly recommend this book to all people aged 14 - 75. I am 66 years old and like this series as much as I do Suzanne Brockmann's other books. I hope that she and Melanie are able to get further sequels written and published more quickly. I can't wait for the next book.

Would you listen to The End Game again? Why?

Yes. This book was so suspenseful and action-packed that I felt like I missed some important parts and would like to cover it all again.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Mike, the main female character is my favorite since she is such a strong woman, but still has full confidence in her male partner, Nick.

Have you listened to any of Renee Raudman and MacLeod Andrews ’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Yes, they also narrated the second book in the series which was also excellent. The two narrators work so well together that I hated to turn it off and listened until 5:00 in the morning.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

James Bond meets the FBI.

Any additional comments?

Catherine Coulter already writes an excellent FBI series which I've been reading for years. Since JT Ellison collaborates with this series, it is even edgier than Sherlock and Savage's FBI. Loved this book!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would recommend the paper version of this book which I did enjoy. I could not recommend the audio version due to the narrator.

What other book might you compare Deep Waters to and why?

Deep Waters is similar to other Jayne Ann Krentz books set in the northwest US, aspects of paranormal powers, romantic mystery, etc.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

The narrator reminded me of high school kids in class play - too melodramatic. It is very irritating and made me want to stop listening. Very unprofessional.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No. The narrator was too annoying to listen to for very long.

Any additional comments?

I have read all of Jayne Ann Krentz's, Jayne Castle's and Amanda Quick's books and enjoyed them all. Narrators can destroy a favorite book by being too melodramatic or with other idiosyncrasies. Publishers should be required to fully listen to at least 5 chapters before they confirm a narrator.

Highland Velvet audiobook cover art

Would you consider the audio edition of Highland Velvet to be better than the print version?

I do enjoy the audio version more than the print due to the great narration provided by Gabra Zackman. Her Scottish accent adds to the narration and the humor of this original novel which I loved when originally published in 1982. Historical Romances stand up better than current day novels. Historicals are not impacted by current inventions like PCs, cell phones, smoking taboos, etc.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Highland Velvet?

My favorite moments of Highland Velvet occur when Bronwyn demonstrates her loyalty to her clan showing her strength of character, willing to sacrifice her love when necessary. I especially like her interaction with her future sisters-in-law.

Which character – as performed by Gabra Zackman – was your favorite?

Gabra's humorous portrayal of Steven Montgomery was my favorite often making me laugh aloud accurately interpreting Deveraux's characters.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

An epic Love Story.

Any additional comments?

Author, Jude Deveraux has been writing great love stories for more than 30 years and she continues today. I have been reading her books since her original book, Black Lyon. I am enjoying having today's narrators' interpretations of these classics. I hope eventually Audible.com will have all of her novels available.

If you could sum up Velvet Angel in three words, what would they be?

Great Love Story with lots of action, strong women, and virile heroes. I like the original Montgomery stories even more than their descendants' books. I hope that Audible will carry all of the Montgomery books soon. Narrator, Gabra Zackman brought Velvet Angel to life with her excellent narration.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Miles is the youngest Montgomery best known for his care of all women and children, yet deadly in battle. He is the definition of a sensitive hero. I read this book when it was originally published. The Audible version is even better due to the excellent narration.

Which scene was your favorite?

My favorite scene is when the other 3 Montgomery husbands hide from their furious wives letting Miles get them safely home after locking them securely in the tower.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Miles' story carries on the excellent story of the Montgomery brothers combining the history, humor, and romance of the medieval period in which they are set.

Any additional comments?

Audible.com has Velvet Promise and Velvet Angel available on their website. I pre-ordered them as soon as I saw they were "coming soon". I will purchase the other Books in the Velvet saga as soon as they are available on Audible.com.

Night Shadow audiobook cover art

Narration was very disappointing.

Story
4 out of 5 stars

Reviewed: 07-02-15

What did you like best about Night Shadow? What did you like least?

The story was a well written Nora Roberts Romantic Suspense featuring a strong leading couple. The Narrator ruined the story. As always, Roberts gave us a strong independent woman who left her family to go to the big city to establish herself as an assistant DA. She had strong beliefs in following the law and often argued with the hero's beliefs. The Narrator made her sound like she was crying while explaining her feelings. She whined through most of the scenes with the hero. I just wanted to tell her to stop whining. I wanted to stop listening about 1/4 of the way into the story. I only continued to listen because I trust Nora Roberts' style of writing. When the arguments decreased, the narration improved. I do not recommend Kate Rudd as a narrator. The whining was very annoying.

What did you like best about this story?

The super power of the hero and Nora Roberts' style of writing. It was a great Romance. Nora has indicated that she has no say about who narrates her books. I believe that she would not have been happy about this whiny narration.

Would you be willing to try another one of Kate Rudd’s performances?

I bought the entire Night Tales Series on Audible. I hope that there are different narrators. If not, I will give Kate Rudd another try. If it isn't any better than this book's narration, I will be returning the other books.

What would have made this romance irresistible?

This romance would have been much better if Deborah would have been portrayed as the strong woman Nora described instead of the cry-baby Kate made her.

Any additional comments?

It is a shame that the authors can't audition prospective narrators. This would ensure narrators dramatized the book properly and did not become too melodramatic.

What made the experience of listening to The Education of Little Tree the most enjoyable?

Narrator was perfect. Made me feel that the story was narrated by a naïve young boy. Really personalized the story.

What did you like best about this story?

Drew me into this poignant story. Could not stop listening.

What about Johnny Heller’s performance did you like?

Accent was done extremely well. Made me believe that he identified with this very young orphaned Native American.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I cried for at least 15 minutes. Was a very good story that drew me right in, and because I felt connected to each of the major character, I personally felt their pain.

Any additional comments?

This story reminded me of the way I felt after watching "Ol' Yeller". I enjoyed the entire story, laughing out loud at times, but crying at the end when reality intrudes.
