I was reluctant to read this when a family member recommended it. I avoided it for awhile because I didn’t want to read another WWII novel like the plethora of other ones I read previously. As I write this, the tears are still drying now my cheeks. It was complex and beautiful. And completely heartbreaking. Yet somehow hopeful and inspiring. Worth reading!

Twice a week, with strollers in tow, they get together in Prospect Park, seeking refuge from the isolation of new motherhood. When the group’s members agree to meet for drinks at a hip local bar, they have in mind a casual evening of fun, a brief break from their daily routine. But on this sultry Fourth of July night during the hottest summer in Brooklyn’s history, something goes terrifyingly wrong: one of the babies is taken from his crib.

This is a very LONG ride, but a thrilling one. It is worth your time, I promise! The seemingly loose strings are fantastically woven into a heart pounding climax. The two characters (hard to definitively call either one a hero or a villain as they are both) are in a race against time and each other spanning the globe. A great book that will inevitably become a great movie.

This book was a quick read, but it's story was far reaching. The characters are flawed but lovable, doing what they believe is right in the face of a series of tragic events. Even so, there is joy and love and even a bit of humor throughout the book to keep the heaviness of the events balanced with some smiles. In the end, this book is about the family we make for our selves and the lengths we would go to ease their pain. A lovely, heartbreaking in parts, charming in others, tale by a spirited and sassy old southern lady.

Ann Patchett’s award winning, New York Times best-selling Bel Canto balances themes of love and crisis as disparate characters learn that music is their only common language. As in Pratchett’s other novels, including Truth & Beauty and The Magician’s Assistant, the author’s lyrical prose and lucid imagination make Bel Canto a captivating story of strength and frailty, love and imprisonment, and an inspiring tale of transcendent romance.
