George Whitefield is considered the greatest evangelist of the 18th century and was a major contributor to the 'Great Awakening' in Colonial America. Born in 1714 of humble origins, he grew up to become a very popular preacher. Churches were packed, bubbling over with eager anticipation to hear him. His preaching was described as apostolic, bold, purely gospel, with an immensity of pathos. His voice was so powerful that 30,000 people could hear him at once.

Many believers feel stunted in their Christian growth. We beat ourselves up over our failures and, in the process, pull away from God because we subconsciously believe He tallies our defects and hangs His head in disappointment. In this new edition - now with a foreword by Michael W. Smith, testimony by Rich Mullins and the author's own epilogue, "Ragamuffin Ten Years Later," Brennan Manning reminds us that nothing could be further from the truth.

I’ve listened to many books over the years, mostly in the Spirit of the Reformers. I really never write reviews, but for this I felt it necessary. While I appreciate what Mr. Manning is trying to accomplish, I believe he does the very Gospel itself a disservice with this work. The danger of men trying ‘reinterpret’ one aspect of scripture while making light of another is exactly what we have here. All respect to Manning himself, I don’t think he communicates well the true Spirit of Biblical Christianity in this particular work. I was horrified to be playing this audiobook out loud at work and blasting his repeated references to the word “Nigger” in this book. Absolutely unnecessary for him to write that into this work. And that one point is indicative of the style of this work in general and from the beginning.

Save your money and find a good book from AW Tozer instead. You’ll be glad you did.

This piece, formerly titled The Divine Conquest, was created as a sequel to The Pursuit of God. Admitting to having been forced by inward pressure and an unbearable burden to write it, Tozer's aim was to assure believers that if they want to know the power of Christ they must be invaded by God. "This little work of the spiritual way has not been 'made' in any mechanical sense, it has been born out of inward necessity.

What is prayer? Are we really praying when we pray? Do we know the power of prayer? These matters and others must be understood if we would have a real prayer life and be effective in prayer. In this little volume of collected messages given over a long period of ministry by the author, and which are now translated and published in English for the first time, Watchman Nee shares with us the lessons on prayer that he has learned through the years.

I have been facing some really big decisions and not able to find real direction from the Lord, so I have sought out a way to know the Lord's voice better. In discovering this book, Watchman Nee has helped me understand that it is learning to submit myself to listening to the Lord's will that I will find answers. A true communion with The Lord is essential to praying in the way that God will answer, as Brother Nee points out.

This has helped shape my prayer life in ways I had never known before!

A lifelong pursuit of knowing God should embody the Christian's existence. According to eminent theologian J.I. Packer, however, Christians have become enchanted by modern skepticism and have joined the "gigantic conspiracy of misdirection" by failing to put first things first. Knowing God aims to redirect our attention to the simple, deep truth that to know God is to love His Word.

A battle rages within every one of us every day. It's the clash between our sense of stubborn self-sufficiency and God's call to recognize that we're really nothing without Him. It's pride versus humility. And it's a fight we can't win without looking repeatedly to Christ and the cross. C. J. Mahaney raises a battle cry to daily, diligently, and deliberately weaken our greatest enemy (pride) and cultivate our greatest friend (humility).

CJ Mahaney nails a great overview on humility. It's an overview that isn't too weighty theologically. He covers some areas of Humility I hadn't previously thought about. This book is peppered with some light humor and personal stories. I recommend this to anyone who is looking to understand Biblical Humility Better.

Also, I enjoyed the voice of the Reader!
