City of Girls audiobook cover art

I wanted so badly to to like it...

The performance by Blair Brown was stellar.
I wanted badly to like this story, to enjoy it and let it swallow me up like a really great audiobook can do. I have loved other Liz Gilbert books in this way - The Signature of All Things is one of my all-time favorites, for example, and of course everyone adored Eat Pray Love. However, City of Girls left something to be desired. I think, maybe, it could have been two separate stories, instead of this long and drawn out, disjointed one. In any case, I won’t stop reading your books, Liz. Anxiously awaiting whatever’s next.

I was disappointed by this book - I really wanted to like it. I tried to make it to the end, but just could not take another minute of the repetitive explanations about Jesus. I thought the first part of the book was alright, but once the shack part starts, it drags on and on... it gets very boring. I requested a refund.

So disappointing. It felt very superficial. I did not finish any of the interviews. I can’t give it 0 stars. Audible, I’d like a refund.

If there were two books I wish I'd read when my oldest child was small, they would be this book and Dr Siegel's other book "No Drama Discipline". Both offer practical advice and strategies for truly connecting with your kids - not just going through the motions of parenting. Invaluable.

I've read some of Brene's other books and loved them. There's just something so personal about listening to her speak, though. This is a wonderful body of research that has taught me so much about connection. Brene Brown, thank you for sharing your research with the world. We were truly starving for it.
