I enjoyed both of Caroline Kepnes' other books, even though the stories were oddly twisted. So I was ready to like this one, but I couldn't even finish it. A story I can't adjust to, no matter how weird.

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

I was interested because it was a story set in Alaska, but the plot was just ridiculous.

What character would you cut from A Cold War?

You can't cut the Monster, but he was so annoying with his poem and his ravings.

Story

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

The narrator was fine. It was the story that was a disappointing surprise.

What was most disappointing about John Lescroart’s story?

It felt like a bait and switch because most of the book takes place without Hardy and Glitzky. It takes place in Iraq and Redwood City with a whole trial to get through with a different lawyer.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

Narrator was fine.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Strong disappointment

Any additional comments?

It should have been noted somewhere that Hardy does a small cameo at the beginning and then shows up again for the last chapters.

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

I have enjoyed the DD Warren series, but this one was too derivative of Gillian Flynn.

What was most disappointing about Lisa Gardner’s story?

She even used the family name, Day, from the Gillian Flynn book and got into the same murder-abilia that happened in that book.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

I think it was a tough job to do so many big female characters and try to give each one some distinctive aspect. I didn't know who I was listening to some of the time.

What character would you cut from Fear Nothing?

The role of the prison superintendent was built up as a red herring, and then let go. It didn't need that much build-up.

Any additional comments?

I was surprised to be disappointed by this book. Lisa Jackson has done much better.

Exclusive audiobook cover art

not really Sandra Brown?

Would you try another book from Sandra Brown and/or Tanya Eby?

I have read a number of books by Sandra Brown, and so I wouldn't dismiss her by this one failure.

What was most disappointing about Sandra Brown’s story?

Sandra Brown usually creates strong, principled female characters, like in Rainwater. This female lead was an idiot, self-serving, and ridiculous.

What character would you cut from Exclusive?

The premise of the book was far-fetched, and neither the female or male lead came across as real people.

Any additional comments?

A real disappointment!

What made the experience of listening to Beautiful Ruins the most enjoyable?

The juxtaposition of Liz Taylor/Richard Burton in fabulous Rome with sad little Porto Vergona.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Pasquale for trying to bridge his family's traditions and his own yearnings

What does Edoardo Ballerini bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

His Italian is gorgeous to listen to, and amazingly, his Richard Burton is also terrific.

If you could take any character from Beautiful Ruins out to dinner, who would it be and why?

Pasquale's wife. I would want to know more of her story.
