As a botanist and professor of plant ecology, Robin Wall Kimmerer has spent a career learning how to ask questions of nature using the tools of science. As a Potawatomi woman, she learned from elders, family, and history that the Potawatomi, as well as a majority of other cultures indigenous to this land, consider plants and animals to be our oldest teachers.

I never wanted this book to end. It is so beautifully written and narrated, think scientific study, mixed with history, indigenous wisdom, and consciousness, communicated through storytelling that borders at times on poetry. A stunning work that recounts historical facts that our Western society has swept under the rug for too long. I think this book should be required reading in every High School across America!

Offred is a Handmaid in the Republic of Gilead, serving in the household of the enigmatic Commander and his bitter wife. She may go out once a day to markets whose signs are now pictures because women are not allowed to read. She must pray that the Commander makes her pregnant, for in a time of declining birthrates her value lies in her fertility, and failure means exile to the dangerously polluted Colonies. Offred can remember a time when she lived with her husband and daughter and had a job, before she lost even her own name....

Would you be willing to try another one of Claire Danes’s performances?

I wouldn't listen to an audio book just because Claire Dane's was the narrator - that is for sure. I found her reading to be incredibly wooden and at times almost monotone. I'm scratching my head wondering why she got such rave reviews? On the other hand, there are some narrators that are so grating to listen to, you can't get through the book, and this was not the case... so ho hum on the narration.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

Probably not.

Any additional comments?

While government control in America is not at all far fetched (it's already well on its way under the guise of homeland security, mandatory health insurance, etc.), I found the direction this story took to be rather far fetched. Too many avenues seemed to be hinted at but not developed, and the extremist Christian / religious element with it's oppression and enslavement of women was unoriginal and depressing (nothing new there). I would have thought the author could have come up with something that wasn't based on historical and current precedent when writing about what happens in the future. I got through the story, but was neither entertained nor inspired by it.

From the day it was stolen from me, I dreamed of recapturing Bebbanburg. The great fort had been built on a rock that was almost an island. It was massive; it could be approached only on land by a single narrow track; and it was mine. Britain is in a state of uneasy peace. Northumbria's Viking ruler, Sigtryggr, and Mercia's Saxon queen, Aethelflaed, have agreed to a truce. And so England's greatest warrior, Uhtred of Bebbanburg, at last has the chance to take back the home his traitorous uncle stole from him so many years ago.

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

Not sure, maybe High School students who are bored.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

Very grating narration. Some of the voices were so soft and breathy you could hardly hear, others were very jarring and harsh. The dramatizations were annoying and distracting.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

Not really, unless you enjoy hearing a long drawn out narration about spousal abuse in various forms, and justification for that abuse.

Any additional comments?

How did this book get so many high ratings?

Waking up in Vegas was never meant to be like this. Evelyn Thomas' plans for celebrating her 21st birthday in Las Vegas were big. Huge. But she sure never meant to wake up on the bathroom floor with a hangover to rival the black plague, a very attractive half-naked tattooed man in her room, and a diamond on her finger large enough to scare King Kong. Now if she could just remember how it all happened.

What would have made Lick better?

Dragged on and on, finally had enough and gave up.

Has Lick turned you off from other books in this genre?

The writing was juvenile and uninteresting.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

Sounded like a whiney teenager, but then that pretty much sums up the depth of the story line.

"You can leave the army, but the army doesn’t leave you. Not always. Not completely," notes Jack Reacher - and sure enough, the retired military cop is soon pulled back into service. This time, for the State Department and the CIA. Someone has taken a shot at the president of France in the City of Light. The bullet was American. The distance between the gunman and the target was exceptional. How many snipers can shoot from three-quarters of a mile with total confidence? Very few, but John Kott - an American marksman gone bad - is one of them...

Switching Time is the first story centering on multiple personality disorder to be told by the treating physician. It is the incredible saga of a young woman stranded in unimaginable darkness who, in order to survive, created 17 different versions of herself. One by one, Karen's "alters" began showing themselves: men, women, young boys, a toddler, black, white, vicious, nurturing, prim, licentious. And their "stepping out" confronted Baer with the challenge of a lifetime.
