Neil Gaiman has long been inspired by ancient mythology in creating the fantastical realms of his fiction. Now he turns his attention back to the source, presenting a bravura rendition of the great northern tales. In Norse Mythology, Gaiman fashions primeval stories into a novelistic arc that begins with the genesis of the legendary nine worlds; delves into the exploits of the deities, dwarves, and giants; and culminates in Ragnarok, the twilight of the gods and the rebirth of a new time and people.

Filled with humor and the cadence of a beautifully woven spin of tales, it is one you will listen to more than once.

I purchased this book not really knowing what I was getting into. it started humorously and I thought it would be a light read, however it became a mini epic story that kept me up all night and I finished it in one breathtaking session. I found myself worried repeatedly over the hare and the man's safety and well being. I laughed out loud at the twist and turns and found myself rooting for their journeys. In the end I was moved by his choices, and his character all shown through his relationship with a hare. Get the book and share the journey.

I started this book with a paperback copy and halfway through, due to time limitations, I bought the Audible version; beat choice ever! I will be purchasing the next two installments from Audible as well. Epic story with a lovely heroine and great characters and story plot. The author rates up there with Jordan, McAferty and Tolkien. The reader gets your heart pumping in suspenseful areas and does an excellent job giving each character their own voice. a must have in any library!

Why we think it’s a great listen: Some books are meant to be read; others are meant to be heard – Water for Elephants falls into the second group, and is one of the best examples we have of how a powerful performance enhances a great story. Nonagenarian Jacob Jankowski reflects back on his wild and wondrous days with a circus. It's the Depression Era and Jacob, finding himself parentless and penniless, joins the Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show on Earth.

I have passed this book up several times and never watched the movie but then I read a review on Audible about stories that should be read to you aloud, as a must the publisher said this was the one.. I purchased the audio and then stayed up all night to finish it in one sitting. I laughed and felt the gammit of emotions for the characters richly woven to make up this story. it was expertly read aloud so vibrantly and with such honesty I could not push pause.. The writer has a wonderful appreciation for growing old and I laughed aloud at the realness of it and in awe at how well it was expressed. I found myself worried about the animals and expected a fateful ending only to be happily surprised at what a great feel good book this ended being for me. I lovex it!!

I sit in awe and amazement every time I read or listen to any book in this series, and yes more than once for each book. He has a way of layering and expounding a story until you are caught in the very fabric yourself. Reading was one thing but having it read to me brought new life into an already superb series. I love that it was unabridged. I can't wait to hear book three and the rest of the story!
