When Navy SEAL Adam Brown woke up on March 17, 2010, he didn’t know he would die that night in the Hindu Kush Mountains of Afghanistan - but he was ready: In a letter to his children, not meant to be seen unless the worst happened, he wrote, "I’m not afraid of anything that might happen to me on this earth, because I know no matter what, nothing can take my spirit from me."

The only thing I can say that isn’t overtly positive is the narration has some minor inaccuracies in pronunciation and sounds a little inconsistent with inflection at times.

On his last combat deployment, Lt. Cmdr. James Reece's entire team was killed in an ambush that also claimed the lives of the aircrew sent in to rescue them. But when those dearest to him are murdered on the day of his homecoming, Reece discovers that this was not an act of war by a foreign enemy but a conspiracy that runs to the highest levels of government. Now, with no family and free from the military's command structure, Reece applies the lessons that he's learned in over a decade of constant warfare toward revenge.

As a combat veteran, husband to the most incredible and fiercely loyal woman on Earth, and father of a precious 7 month old little girl who's whole world revolves around her daddy this book struck several distinct chords in me. The accuracy, ranging from military to geographical and beyond, with which Jack Carr writes blew my mind. I found myself on an emotional roller coaster while listening. I laughed, I got angry, and I cried multiple times. A connection was formed between myself and this story's principle character, James Reese, and was solidified by the small innocuous details that can only be validated by experiencing war firsthand and surviving combat. If you want a love story, this book has it. If you want a military thriller, this book has it. If you want a tale wrought with political corruption, you guessed it, this book has it. If you want to know the story of a man, guided by a love for the people he holds dearest to his heart and driven by a rage that burns hotter with each turn of events I implore you to give this book a listen. You will not regret it.

In 2009 Clinton Romesha of Red Platoon and the rest of the Black Knight Troop were preparing to shut down Command Outpost Keating, the most remote and inaccessible in a string of bases built by the US military in Nuristan and Kunar in the hope of preventing Taliban insurgents from moving freely back and forth between Afghanistan and Pakistan. Three years after Keating's construction, the army was finally ready to concede what the men on the ground had known immediately: It was simply too isolated and too dangerous to defend.

The prologue read by the author is not the easiest thing to listen to with the unnatural rate of speech but well worth getting through. The epilogue is far better read by the author.

My only gripe is about the end of the book when the narrator states that the music and words to two songs are used by permission. I heard the music, but no words to accompany the music.

The narrator should have obtained the proper way to pronounce certain acronyms and military terms. Thus is a small issue but, to veterans like myself, makes listening much easier when done correctly. Great book!!!!
