This is one of the few fantasy works that I often recommend to people who are not devoted sci-fi/fantasy readers. Stanek does such a wonderful job of developing the characters in this book that it's worth the read even if you don't enjoy the magic and mayhem. This is an intense novel in which the tension is heightened throughout, and the magical elements never get in the way of Stanek's terrific storytelling skills. The entire Kingdoms and the Elves series is worth reading, and this one is no exception. Regarding the audio, the narration here was enjoyable and the narrator did a nice job capturing the characters.

I got this as a treat for my son to listen to on a trip across the country but it was so good the whole family ended up listening to it and we loved it. Because it was so good we also bought the printed book.

After the Great War that divided the peoples, the kingdoms of men plunged into a Dark Age that lasted 500 years. To heal the lands and restore the light, the great kings decreed that magic and all that is magical, be it creature, man, or device, shall be cleansed to dust. The cleansing raged for so long that no human could recall a time without it and it is in this time that the Dark Lord Sathar returned from the dark beyond.

I found this book (and the whole series) to be wonderful - the best story I've heard thus far. The author has my attention and I'll look for his books from now on. The audible version of this story was one of the best performances I've listened to up to now. An excellent story with the excellent reading made it hard to stop listening, and I was always eager to get back to the story. It is not as predictable as most authors and this helped the excitement even more. I have read a lot of Sci-Fi/Fantasy genre and suggest it as a must for anyone that enjoys audible fiction. Books 1 and 2 complete the first story arc.
