I am a huge fan of Diana’s work I had read all of the books but I have to say this one was god awful. Not the story itself or the lesson that she tries to help you learn about writing, just the narration. Dear Diana please do not ever narrate a book again you are not good at it. She basically mumbles and speed read through the entire narration I couldn’t even finish the book it was that bad

Everyone in our world today should be required to read this book. If you hate cops, love them, are married or dating one or just want a better understanding of what they go through on a day to day bases you should read this book. It’s very important to educate yourself to what you are protesting or are angry about and cops tend to always be in the news for something these days. For me it let me better understand my bf a 17 yr bet of the force. It’s important for people to know that very few cops are bad but that cops reflect society so you get all kinds.

I find myself thinking one word to describe this book: almost. SPF has the makings good writer but he will need time to develop characters, plot, climax and timing.

I liked Mickey’s granddaddy, you could clearly see him as a character. He is a little of my grandpa, a little of yours and likely SPF’s. The sister also was easy to imagine, I pictured the big sister from Wonder Years but as a mega bitch. The lead character Mickey is flawed. He’s in his head so much he often misses the world happening around him. So much so that he lets 20+ years go by stalking and being madly in love with Jane even though he only talks to her maybe 5 times. It’s an incredibly childish view of love. Can you truly love someone you know almost nothing about? He never talks about falling in love with anyone else, even as an adult but he goes on a couple dates with one girl in high school. I’m sorry but I just don’t buy it. You date other people, even if you met the love of your life as a kid because...life!

There was also very little true conflict until the very end and it’s very predictable...wink, cough, John Green...

All that being said I didn’t hate it and I would likely read another SPF book. Mainly because I’m interested to see how he grows as a writer.

I’m so confused why this book is so popular?! I’ve got 3 chapters left so far and it’s just painful to finish. The book is nothing but a series of story where people have used habit. There really isn’t that much scientific data or groundbreaking new facts. The whole book can be summarized as such: If you want to do something, start doing it then in time it will become habit and part of your nature and you won’t have to even think about it anymore! BAM! It’s like magic! The end.

Having read Prince of Tides I knew what Pat Conroy was capable of as a writer. If you are not familiar with his work just know this one thing, storytelling for him comes across as effortless. Even though I myself have no military experience I found myself completely drawn to these characters and their gut wrenching experience in Military college. I dare say this is probably one of the best audio books I have ever listen to. The narrator does a fantastic job with all of the characters and accents. I really can’t say enough good things about this book, just do yourself a favor and buy it.

This book is a prime example of why sometimes authors should NOT read their own book. The story is amazing from beginning to end, even if you’re not in historical novels. The only problem is the authors terrible monotone voice. His accent is annoying at times and he mispronounces words throughout the whole book. Who does that?! Where was the director/editor of this audiobook, on the can reading the newspaper? If you can get passed these problems then it’s a great book.

This book should be either purchased as a kindle book or at least come with a reader. Do not waste your time with the audio book. An hour of it is just listing off recipes and ingredients. No bueno.
