I read all of the Palliser Novels and Barchester novels years ago. Having gotten fed up with contemporary fiction I went back to them, but as audio books. They are absolutely terrific. Trollope's characters are so real you can find them among your friends and neighbors. Their problems are universal, abuses of power, unsuitable marriages, forgiveness. Simon Vance is an outstanding reader. Each voice is unique and understandable. He even carries the characters voices across all the books. He adds so much to the story, it is like a radio drama.

Trollope is such a great writer. All of his characters are so memorable and their foibles so human. Simon Vance is an excellent reader who masters all the voices. All 24 hours were an absolute delight.

After having listened to Classics of English Literature, I was looking forward to this book. It was informative, but Mr Weil mostly just gave a synopsis of the story and made them sound really boring in the process. He does have a great voice and I enjoyed the folk songs he sang.

A great survey course to help one appreciate the works one has already read and create a desire to read all the rest. Mr. Sutherland is a great story teller, slips in a few clever jokes and makes English Literature thoroughly enjoyable for the interested lay reader. Just the level of detail I like.

Very dramatically captures the chaos and insanity of being in Vietnam. You never know exactly what is happening, which is probably how most of the soldiers felt. However, the narrator had this urgency in his voice that was exhausting. The individual voices were good, but the voice over just never let up

The Kopp sisters had distinct well developed personalities, especially compared to the sisters in Commonwealth, a much higher profile overrated book. Christina Moore was an excellent narrator, all the voices were different and appropriate to their characters. But there just wasn't enough there for a novel. I did finish, but only because I couldn't find a plot summary online.

Bougainvillea without thorns? These two egregious botanical errors from an author raised in southern California got me off to a bad start with this book. As a huge fan of Bel Canto and State of Wonder I was really looking forward to this book. But the large cast of characters left most of them underdeveloped and subsequently hard to get inteterested in. Hope Davis' deadpan delivery was for once appropriate to the material. I found the famous author pick up scene at the Palmer House especially tiring. I did finish it and found some issues compelling, but will hope for better luck next time.

Where does Deep South rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Pretty good.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Not relevant

Would you be willing to try another one of John McDonough’s performances?

Never, he was the worst. Why would you have a narrator with a pronounced lisp?

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

not relevant

Any additional comments?

We listened to this book while driving through many of the places he also visited which made it more interesting. But seemed like he got stuck in a rut and only presented the african american point of view. While we appreciated their stories, we know from experience that there are plenty of white southerners who are not red neck racists.

What did you like best about The Sound of Things Falling? What did you like least?

Slow paced, I think deliberately like the country of Colombia. Even though nothing much happens, you get carried along by the thoughts of the main character

How did the narrator detract from the book?

He sounded like a robot, couldn't pronounce English words correctly, let alone Spanish.

Any additional comments?

Audible should pull this book from it's catalog until it can be re-recorded by a competent reader.

Madeline is self absorbed, whiney & uses way too many tortured similies in her every day speach. Big story line build up about serial arsonists is resolved with a throw away line after a complete plot u turn. Should never have listened to the whole thing, but I had a long drive and was out of credits.
