Only a handful of people in the world know that mankind's magic comes from a living creature, and it is a refugee from another universe. The Power showed up here in the 1850s because it was running from something. Now it is 1933, and the Power's hiding place has been discovered by a killer. It is a predator that eats magic and leaves destroyed worlds in its wake. Earth is next. Former private eye Jake Sullivan knows the score. The problem is, hardly anyone believes him.

If you like the gorgeous, super tough guy falling hard for the beautiful, smart, sexy woman; with a little plot and danger to space out the sex; then you'll love this one. The tough guy with a well hidden devotion for the very few people he loves, and the girl who can deal with any situation (except resisting him) play the yoyo game between mindless need and rebelling against themselves and each other. Lori always delivers good foreplay and some interesting twists to keep you going.

Another great story by Patricia Briggs and wonderful performance by Lorelei King. Patricia Briggs not only brings enough surprises to keep you listening (or turning pages) but also allows the characters to grow and stay interesting as well. I finished in 3 days and now I'm wanting more.....but it was too good to space out.

I also love not being forced to listen to the same background material book after book after book, like some series. Occasional background may be necessary for new listeners but its so tedious for the faithful. It's not so bad with a book because you can skim over it but with audio (at least mine) it's difficult to skip the right amount. I also never feel the author is writing under a deadline and just wants to finish the book. The writing is consistent throughout.

There she tricks the tall-tale hero Mike Fink out of his flatboat, equips it as a floating casino-showboat, and heads south to New Orleans, battling murderous bandits, British soldiers, and other scoundrels along the way.
