This was a horrid experience. After about 3 chapters I realized that every conversation included the words: "do you understand? tell me you understand. Curiosity got the better of me and drove me to listen to the whole thing to see how many times this writer would actually use that phrase. 173 times in 24 chapters and often with the worst French accent I have ever heard. . This book deserves negative stars

Set in the vibrant 14th century of Chaucer and the Black Death, the classic romance Katherine features knights fighting in battle, serfs struggling in poverty, and the magnificent Plantagenets - Edward III, the Black Prince, and Richard II - who ruled despotically over a court rotten with intrigue. Within this era of danger and romance, John of Gaunt, the king's son, falls passionately in love with the already married Katherine.

Like all the Bedwyn men, Aidan has a reputation for cool arrogance. But this proud nobleman also possesses a loyal, passionate heart - and it is this fierce loyalty that has brought Colonel Lord Aidan to Ringwood Manor to honor a dying soldier's request. Having promised to comfort and protect the man's sister, Aidan never expected to find a headstrong, fiercely independent woman who wants no part of his protection, nor did he expect the feelings this beguiling creature would ignite in his guarded heart.

Mary Balogh's prose read by Rosalyn Landor is a recipe for nothing less than outstanding. Ms. Balogh has the ability to develop believable characters who face difficult issues with strength and accomplish success with humility. Ms Landor brings these characters to life with exceptional skill and a cadence that fits the situations and the time in history. This book and in fact the entire series are worth time and attention.
