Oh thank you Melody Beattie for reminding me the only one I can change is myself. Gratitude for this practice, and for you reading this audiobook in your own voice, a huge plus of this version. I'm starting Melody's easy-to-follow miracle exercise today.

I even had a dream about this book: "Make Miracles in 40 Days" and another, "Change the Brush", were next to each other on my table. I woke up wondering about the other book... and upon contemplation, believe it was my inner compass or higher power telling me that it was time to up my gratitude game, which I've been doing for a few years upon waking. Just as you need to change a paint brush to do the detail work in the corners of a room, or change your toothbrush every often, it's time for me to change the brush in my gratitude practice - and likely other parts of my life too.

The cons if you listen to the audiobook - either take notes as you go along, or search Miracle Exercise (it's sadly not on her website), in order to start the 40 day exercise. I would hope in the future Audible can do attachments with books like this. It's not like I can flip through the audiobook easily to find the specifics of the Miracle Exercise.

At once wildly original and stuffed with irresistible nostalgia, Ready Player One is a spectacularly genre-busting, ambitious, and charming debut—part quest novel, part love story, and part virtual space opera set in a universe where spell-slinging mages battle giant Japanese robots, entire planets are inspired by Blade Runner, and flying DeLoreans achieve light speed.

Loved this book! Great audiobook. Fooled my teen into listening to it on spring break while driving around UT :) even HE thought it was great!

We watched the movie after we finished the audiobook, the film is totally different than the book. Both very good, just different. We enjoyed comparing and contrasting. And, yay, even my non-reader teen son said the book is better than the movie.

Really fascinating story based on real-life adoptions of stolen children... will likely make you want to read the non fiction accounts that this novel is based on as it did for me and my friend Jodie who recommended it to me after her book club read it. (We both would love to read the non fiction version of this same story.) Very well written and researched. Excellent audiobook version. Highly recommended.

The irascible A. J. Fikry, owner of Island Books - the only bookstore on Alice Island - has already lost his wife. Now his most prized possession, a rare book, has been stolen from right under his nose in the most embarrassing of circumstances. The store itself, it seems, will be next to go. One night upon closing, he discovers a toddler in his children’s section with a note from her mother pinned to her Elmo doll: I want Maya to grow up in a place with books and among people who care about such kinds of things. I love her very much, but I can no longer take care of her.

Travis Parker has everything a man could want: a good job, loyal friends, even a waterfront home in small-town North Carolina. In full pursuit of the good life, including boating, swimming, and regular barbecues with his good-natured buddies, he holds the vague conviction that a serious relationship with a woman would only cramp his style. That is, until Gabby Holland moves in next door.

** spoiler alert ** Oh I wanted to like this book.
I saw "this is Nicholas Sparks' best book yet" in a few reviews. I have liked his stories before.
I needed a cry. I needed a heartwarming book.
But this book was less than I expected, in all these areas.
Dubious instant attraction story.
Predictable drama. (although outcome was also dubious. If only this would happen in real life.)
Gabby's introduction to the reader was as a "hysterical" female in the old-school use of the word... grrr.
Moving on...

When Michael Pollan set out to research how LSD and psilocybin (the active ingredient in magic mushrooms) are being used to provide relief to people suffering from difficult-to-treat conditions such as depression, addiction, and anxiety, he did not intend to write what is undoubtedly his most personal book. But upon discovering how these remarkable substances are improving the lives not only of the mentally ill but also of healthy people coming to grips with the challenges of everyday life, he decided to explore the landscape of the mind in the first person as well as the third.

Very fascinating book with lots of great "I didn't know that" moments! Very well researched - audiobook read by the author to make it even more "real" and accessible. Started out thinking I might want to follow in Michael Pollan's research path, but by the end I was not converted to trying psychedelics except perhaps in an end of life situation (which I already had been introduced to via a Marin TedX talk that opened this fascinating category to me.) If you're interested, do read.

Tara Westover was 17 the first time she set foot in a classroom. Born to survivalists in the mountains of Idaho, she prepared for the end of the world by stockpiling home-canned peaches. In the summer she stewed herbs for her mother, a midwife and healer, and in the winter she salvaged in her father's junkyard. Her father forbade hospitals, so Tara never saw a doctor or nurse. Gashes and concussions, even burns from explosions, were all treated at home with herbalism. Then, lacking any formal education, Tara began to educate herself. Her quest for knowledge transformed her.

So well written, crazier than fiction story that shows how education can truly change your life. HIGHLY recommended. Five stars on all accounts.

I've now read three related but separate books by The Arbinger Institute - and all are very well-written (and well narrated on Audible), easy to understand and implement, and, in my opinion, important to put into action. Leadership and Self-Deception: Getting Out of the Box was the first I read, then The Anatomy of Peace: Resolving the Heart of Conflict which actually is a prequel to the first but written after, and now The Outward Mindset ties it together and expands what the lessons are - treating people as people not things, not tasks, and for all of us to be present and to put yourself into their mindset.

Highly recommend this entire series for anyone who comes into contact with human beings regularly :)
