They meet at a local tavern in the small town of Belleville, Delaware. Polly is set on heading west. Adam says he's also passing through. Yet she stays, and he stays - drawn to this mysterious redhead whose quiet stillness both unnerves and excites him. Over the course of a punishing summer, Polly and Adam abandon themselves to a steamy, inexorable affair. Still, each holds something back from the other - dangerous, even lethal secrets. Then someone dies. Was it an accident or part of a plan? By now Adam and Polly are so ensnared in each other's lives and lies that neither one knows how to get away.

As an old house is demolished in a gentrifying section of London, a workman discovers a tiny skeleton, buried for years. For journalist Kate Waters, it's a story that deserves attention. She cobbles together a piece for her newspaper, but at a loss for answers, she can only pose a question: Who is the Building Site Baby? As Kate investigates, she unearths connections to a crime that rocked the city decades earlier: A newborn baby was stolen from the maternity ward in a local hospital and was never found.

I admit, I'm not good a guessing "who dunit" and I couldn't figure out this one either. However, I don't really try that hard because I like being surprised. This book did not disappoint.

I read one of the later books in this series years ago on a long car trip. The book made that long trip tolerable. Fast forward several years and I decided to start at the beginning of the series to see if it was one I wanted to invest in. I'm glad I did. This is the third one and it kept me guessing until the end. It will be interesting to see how the relationship between the two main characters evolve. I already bought Book 4!
