Once, Vlad Taltos knew his trade: he killed people for a living. That skill got him his foothold in House Jhereg, running the rackets for a chunk of urban Adrilankha. Later, things happened that left Vlad a changed man, on the run from the Jhereg and frequently involved in the affairs of Dragonlords, Empresses, and even Jenoine. Far more involved than the average human. Meanwhile, in the very distant past, one of the gods fashioned an artifact - a silver figurine of a tiassa, a winged panther-like animal.

I have been looking at this series of books for a while. But the cover made it so very uninteresting for me. I read a few reviews and decided to give it a try. I am so very glad I did! It had a great story that was very active. The characters were quite entertaining. Very similar flow and by play as the Edge series.

Once upon a time, before Katrina.... Sunshine came to New Orleans to escape her past and to catch up with her elusive dreams, but she got lost in the old city's seductive Southern nights. The tempting dark side of the French Quarter catered to her weaknesses, offering her just exactly what she desired - cheap drugs, the wrong kind of men, and the thrill of living on the edge. Alienated from her friends and in need of help, she called out to one of them...but her message didn't get through in time.

The reader has a good voice, but I felt he didn't add enough difference between the two male character's voices. I was so confused in the beginning. I finished the book, but found I tuned it out sometimes while I was listening. It had a solid plot, just not enough character by play or active moments to keep my attention. Edit - going back and reading the description of this book all I want to say is B.S! It was completely misleading. I'm removing a star.

It was the perfect solution - put highly connected Captain Willard Phule in charge of the worst dregs of the Space Force. Sure, Phule's Company may be a band of rejects and misfits, but they did manage to save the day with their unorthodox methods. I decided to try this book because it was advertised "if you like Mercedes Thompson nooks you will LOVE"..um NO. The reader is fine. The story line was boring! I kept tuning it out. extremely disappointed with this book. It wasn't bad..it was just boring. The author tried to make the female lead "mysterious and witty". I just couldn't buy into the story line.

The reader did a great job on this book! The story had a few angles that eventually tied together nicely. I almost felt like there were two styles of book going for a while. Wild, hack slash, barbarian adventure. Then more civilized where sword play is an art, and the city is more gentrified. The definition between the people split into upper class and lower. Then the author tied the two story lines together.

This is the 4th book of the series and it is still entertaining. Characters are well written. My only complaint is the reader has decided to provide "accents" to characters speech that were not there in the previous books. It was slightly distracting to me, because I felt like giving an eye roll each time the reader swapped between some characters. Overall a great book!
