Glass House audiobook cover art

Fascinating...for locals of Lancaster Ohio

This audiobook is probably fascinating for locals of Lancaster Ohio. All others are likely to be a bit bored. The history of the Anchor Glass company goes on too long. The individuals aren’t really fleshed out so you have a hard time distinguishing between people. You’re hours in before you get to the story of the current situation without feeling in any way entertained.

A great audiobook that illustrates the dangers of privatizing the public services. If the privatizing and limiting of the national weather service doesn’t upset you, nothing will.

Any additional comments?

This book is so focused on technical details that he almost forgets to put a story in. While I loved some of his previous work, this book was almost painful to sit through (and full disclosure I still am not finished).

A great idea for a book, a good deal of scholarship, but thin on facts. What's worse is that when he runs out of facts he starts constructing an imagined story of the way the codex came to its current location and owner. While he explicitly states that he is imagining these details, it makes the actual history seem less important and more hollow. About half way through it seems there simply isn't enough for a book.

What would have made One Second After better?

I read One Second After with an open mind (despite the foreward written by Newt Gingrich) but this is basically a powerpoint presentation. Much of the "action" is discussions about what has or will happen because of the EMP. The characters were poorly written and many had little action unless it was to mechanically advance the plot. I can see why it was read by people in Congress, but as a novel it lacks.

Would you listen to another book narrated by Paul Barach?

The author seems a little tired of reading his book by the time he recorded this book. He also seems to lose his place frequently and repeats a sentence several times.

Any additional comments?

This book probably started out as a story he told friends over beers after he returned from his trip. Unfortunately, like most bar stories it seems like a really good idea at the time to write a book about it, but loses something in the longer form. He tries to intersperse a bit of humor, but even that seems forced. While the trek must have been amazing, the retelling is less impressive.
