I really liked this book . The biggest drawback is the feeling the author had read Gone Girl too many times.

Near the end of her life, Mary Mann Hamilton (1866-c.1936) was encouraged to record her experiences as a female pioneer. The result is the only known firsthand account of a remarkable woman thrust into the center of taming the American South - surviving floods, tornadoes, and fires; facing bears, panthers, and snakes; managing a boardinghouse in Arkansas that was home to an eccentric group of settlers; and running a logging camp in Mississippi that blazed a trail for development in the Mississippi Delta.

It’s not the great American novel but the author has talent. There are enough twist and turns to make a good mystery. I thought at first few chapters it was just going to be a routine cheater and maybe murder story but then it surprises. I recommend this book and am going to listen to the next in this new series. The second is called “ Freak.”

Dave Robicheaux returns in another Bayou adventure, this one more gruesome and gut-wrenching than any that have come before. Hurricane Katrina has ravaged New Orleans, leaving the streets and buildings flooded and the city awash with opportunists, looters, and vicious criminals. There is no order, no law. Police are shooting randomly at innocent people, prison guards have abandoned their posts, and bodies float through the streets and hang from trees.

Detective Dave Robicheaux’s world isn’t filled with too many happy stories, but Desmond Cormier’s rags-to-riches tale is certainly one of them. Robicheaux first met Cormier on the streets of New Orleans, when the young, undersized boy had foolish dreams of becoming a Hollywood director. Twenty-five years later, when Robicheaux knocks on Cormier’s door, it's to ask about a young woman he found who’s been crucified. She disappeared near Cormier’s Cyrpemort Point estate, and Robicheaux, along with young Deputy Sean McClain, are looking for answers.

No one writes with a descriptive talent better than Mr Burke. The most ordinary is described in a way that can transport the reader and bring a scene to life. I not only could see New Orleans but could feel the rain and smell the crawfish and other sights only found in NOLA. The story is strong and the characters well developed. This book is well worth your credit. Enjoy!
