Two decades ago Adam Sharp's piano playing led him into a passionate relationship with Angelina Brown, an intelligent and strong-willed actress. They had a chance at something more - but Adam didn't take it. Now, on the cusp of turning 50, Adam likes his life. He's happy with his partner, Claire; he excels in music trivia at quiz night at the local pub; he looks after his mother; and he does the occasional consulting job in IT. But he can never quite shake off his nostalgia for what might have been.

On a cold and snowy night in 1910, Ursula Todd is born to an English banker and his wife. She dies before she can draw her first breath. On that same cold and snowy night, Ursula Todd is born, lets out a lusty wail, and embarks upon a life that will be, to say the least, unusual. For as she grows, she also dies, repeatedly, in a variety of ways, while the young century marches on towards its second cataclysmic world war.
