In her memoir, a work of deep reflection and mesmerizing storytelling, Michelle Obama invites listeners into her world, chronicling the experiences that have shaped her - from her childhood on the South Side of Chicago to her years as an executive balancing the demands of motherhood and work to her time spent at the world's most famous address. With unerring honesty and lively wit, she describes her triumphs and her disappointments, both public and private, telling her full story as she has lived it - in her own words and on her own terms.

I loved loved loved this book. Michelle Obama is such an impressive human being, and it was just wonderful to hear her tell her own story so eloquently. It was also wonderful the way the thread that ran through the book wasn't simply "Becoming," but also about women - and especially women of color - finding and valuing our own voices.

While her performance was wonderful, the audio editing was startlingly shabby. There were SEVERAL - like more than a dozen, maybe even two dozen - instances where it sounded like she'd had to go back and re-record a sentence or two. That's no problem in and of itself, having to make content changes in post-production isn't uncommon. But I shouldn't have been able to so obviously HEAR that's what had happened.

My response to this audiobook is deeply personal. My own story is extremely similar to arkin's, in that I spent my 20's doing deep psychological work, and after I had gone as far as I could in that arena, I turned to spiritual traditions.

On my spiritual path, I have had many metaphysical experiences similar to the ones he describes: memories of past lives I have lived, inexplicable physical healings, an ability I possess to transmute energy in astounding ways.

As a writer myself, I've been wrangling with how to convey these experiences to my growing audience, in a way that would give context to who I am without, frankly, making me sound like a nut job to a mainstream audience. His matter of fact storytelling has provided an incredibly helpful template for me. Thanks Alan!

On the surface, the Victorian age is one of propriety, industry, prudishness and piety. But scratch the surface and you’ll find scandal, sadism, sex, madness, malice and murder. Presented by Stephen Fry, this series delves deep into a period of time we think we know, to discover an altogether darker reality. The stories we’re told offer a different perspective on an era which underwent massive social change. As education, trade, technology and culture blossomed, why was there an undercurrent of the ‘forbidden’ festering beneath Victorian society?

I just finished listening to this book and the very next thing I'm going to do is listen to the whole thing all over again. It was that good.

No wait, before I listen to the book all over again I'm going to go sign up to volunteer for Planned Parenthood.

I'm in awe of Cecile Richards and her career. The number of profound political movements she's been apart of, and sometimes the leader of, in her lifetime is astounding. The stories she tells are fascinating and she tells them exceptionally well.

My one tiny criticism is that the stories are told in nothing resembling chronological order. But that one small flaw does not mar an exceptional book.
