**See author's note on adult content below.** From the dark depths of the past, comes the tale of the first wizard of Illeniel. Daniel Tennick lived simply, a young shepherd with few troubles and little to occupy his mind, until the warden appeared. Daniel's power awakens, and he finds himself hunted by the servants of the cruel and uncaring forest gods. Trapped by his gift, Daniel will uncover the secrets of the deep woods and those who live there, a civilization created from the grave of an older one.

Danny North is the first Gate Mage to be born on Earth in nearly 2,000 years, or at least the first to survive and claim his power, for families of Westil in exile on Earth have a treaty that requires the death of any suspected Gate Mage. The wars between the families had been terrible until at last they realized it was their own survival in question.

the story was wonderful. very creative and thoughtful. It delves into life and death and things that are really important. the story is definitely unique. the narration was a different matter. There were two narrators, a man and a woman. I would get used to certain characters with the voice of the man and then the next chapter the same characters would then have the voice of a woman. It was very distracting. took away from the story. that was a mistake.
