Dan is a gifted writer and a self-deprecating comedian. I appreciated his journey thru non-secular and secular skepticism that ultimately conveyed to me, the reader, that he approached mindfulness with the same amount of skepticism that the rest of us likely would or, perhaps, do. So for him to become a convert seems to me to be a pretty convincing reason to at least give it a try.

A coming-of-age tale for the young and naïve 17-year-old Catherine Morland, Northanger Abbey takes a decidedly comical look at themes of class, family, love and literature. Revelling in the sensationalist - and extremely popular - Gothic fiction of her day, the story follows Catherine out of Bath to the lofty manor of the Tilneys, where her overactive imagination gets to work constructing an absurd and melodramatic explanation for the death of Mrs Tilney, which threatens to jeopardise her newly forged friendships.

While I really enjoyed the story, the performance is what really sold the book for me! Emma Thompson never disappoints! That said, neither does Jane Austen!

Tara Westover was 17 the first time she set foot in a classroom. Born to survivalists in the mountains of Idaho, she prepared for the end of the world by stockpiling home-canned peaches. In the summer she stewed herbs for her mother, a midwife and healer, and in the winter she salvaged in her father's junkyard. Her father forbade hospitals, so Tara never saw a doctor or nurse. Gashes and concussions, even burns from explosions, were all treated at home with herbalism. Then, lacking any formal education, Tara began to educate herself. Her quest for knowledge transformed her.

This book was simply astonishing on so many levels. In some ways, it's a book about pulling yourself up by the bootstraps. In others, it's a testament to human resilience. In yet others, it's about family dysfunction. And still others, about radical Mormon fundamentalism. You just keep peeling back the layers!

This book was so compelling from the start! The narrator does a fabulous job. This disease is wretched, much like Lou Gehrigs disease, but worse in some ways, marginally better in others. I learned so much while being thoroughly enraptured with the story.
