Liz Talbot is a modern Southern belle: she blesses hearts and takes names. She carries her Sig 9 in her Kate Spade handbag, and her golden retriever, Rhett, rides shotgun in her hybrid Escape. When her grandmother is murdered, Liz high-tails it back to her South Carolina island home to find the killer. But when her police-chief brother shuts her out of the investigation, she opens her own. Then her long-dead best friend pops in and things really get complicated.

What made the experience of listening to Lowcountry Boil the most enjoyable?

The soothing southern accent. Made me feel right at home

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Yes, it did. The little touches of "supernatural" made it interesting, as well

Have you listened to any of Loretta Rawlins’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No, but I will be looking for her again.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Just hearing those southern sayings again. Reminded me of both my grandmothers.

Any additional comments?

I've been a Stephanie Plum fan for years, and nothing as come close until now. Since I am a southern girl, these "Lowcountry" books fit me to a tee!

Liz Talbot thinks she's seen another ghost when she meets Calista McQueen. She's the spitting image of Marilyn Monroe. Born precisely fifty years after the ill-fated star, Calista's life has eerily mirrored the late starlet's - and she fears the looming anniversary of Marilyn's death will also be hers. Before Liz can open a case file, Calista's life coach is executed. Suspicious characters swarm around Calista like mosquitoes on a sultry low country evening: her certifiable mother, a fake aunt, her control-freak psychoanalyst, a private yoga instructor, her peculiar housekeeper, and an obsessed ex-husband.

It is Nick and Amy Dunne's fifth wedding anniversary. Presents are being wrapped and reservations are being made when Nick's clever and beautiful wife disappears from their rented McMansion on the Mississippi River. Husband-of-the-Year Nick isn't doing himself any favors with cringe-worthy daydreams. Under mounting pressure from the police and the media - as well as Amy's fiercely doting parents - the town golden boy parades an endless series of lies, deceits, and inappropriate behavior. Nick is oddly evasive, and he's definitely bitter - but is he really a killer?

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

It would have taken an awful lot to make me give this even a 3 star rating.

The whole thing was boring, predictable, and very uninspiring. I would have requested a refund, but why bother, at least it was mindless white noise.

Would you ever listen to anything by Gillian Flynn again?

No, probably not.

What didn’t you like about Julia Whelan and Kirby Heyborne ’s performance?

The readers were fine. It was the words they read that undid the whole performance.

What character would you cut from Gone Girl?

The whole book

Any additional comments?

Don't waste your time.

Classic Malley - to avoid being shipped off to boarding school, she takes off with some guy she met online. Poor Richard - he knows his cousin’s in trouble before she does. Wild Skink - he’s a ragged, one-eyed ex-governor of Florida, and enough of a renegade to think he can track Malley down. With Richard riding shotgun, the unlikely pair scour the state, undaunted by blinding storms, crazed pigs, flying bullets, and giant gators.

If you could sum up Skink - No Surrender in three words, what would they be?

If I had know this was a young adult novel, I may not have purchased it. No matter how much I love Carl Hiaasen. But I did purchase it, and sat thru the whole thing. Didn't kill me. As a matter of fact, was not too bad. But I really wanted the "full Skink" experience

Who was your favorite character and why?

Skink is always my favorite. Things with him are black or white, no in between.

Have you listened to any of Kirby Heyborne’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No, never listened to him. Not too bad. But his tone is so soft & soothing, it made me sleepy. Don't know if that's a bad thing or not.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Not really

Any additional comments?

Ok for young readers.

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Well, maybe not. Although, I didn't have anything else to listen too. The three stories were all the same, the characters were all the same.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

Maybe made the characters more different from each other. But really, I think this was a not too good attempt to follow Evanovich's formula for a good read. Just did not work here

Did the narration match the pace of the story?

not too well

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

No, no way. Just not that much going for any one of these three stories,

Six years ago, investigator Sid Halley retired for good. He'd been harassed, beaten, shot, even lost a hand to his investigating business, and enough was enough. For the sake of his wife and new daughter he gave up that life of danger and uncertainty, and he thought nothing would ever lure him back into the game. He thought wrong. Sir Richard Stewart, chairman of the racing authority, begs Sid to investigate a series of dodgy races. Sid adamantly refuses, but the following day, Sir Richard is found dead under suspicious circumstances. And then a man with an Irish accent contacts Sid, telling him to deliver a whitewashed report about the suspected race-fixing...or else.

Don't know about the print version, but the audio was rocking!!!

Dick Francis was always one of my favorite authors. His son has continued in his father's footsteps. Such a joy!!

What does Martin Jarvis bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Oh, wow!! Mr Jarvis, what can I say? His voice gives texture to the story, Just a pleasure to hear.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I sure could have. And then, listen to it over again!

Any additional comments?

Normally, when a popular author passes away, you are left with only their body of work. So, you can read them over again, but never get any new material. With Felix Francis taking up the pen to follow his father's "word prints", we all can look forward to many new great reads (or listens) in the future!!
