The Ruhar hit us on Columbus Day. There we were, innocently drifting along the cosmos on our little blue marble, like the Native Americans in 1492. Over the horizon came ships of a technologically advanced, aggressive culture, and BAM! There went the good old days, when humans got killed only by each other. So, Columbus Day. It fits. When the morning sky twinkled again, this time with Kristang starships jumping in to hammer the Ruhar, we thought we were saved.

Ignatius Perrish spent the night drunk and doing terrible things. He woke up the next morning with a thunderous hangover, a raging headache, and a pair of horns growing from his temples. At first Ig thought the horns were a hallucination, the product of a mind damaged by rage and grief. He had spent the last year in a lonely, private purgatory, following the death of his beloved, Merrin Williams, who was raped and murdered under inexplicable circumstances.

What happens when, on a perfectly ordinary evening, all the things you believed in and took for granted are turned upside down? When her husband of more than 20 years is away on one of his business trips, Darcy Anderson looks for batteries in the garage. Her toe knocks up against a box under a worktable and she discovers the stranger inside her husband. It’s a horrifying discovery, rendered with bristling intensity, and it definitively ends a good marriage.

George Orwell's classic satire of the Russian Revolution is an intimate part of our contemporary culture, quoted so often that we tend to forget who wrote the original words! This must-read is also a must-listen!

The preface was ... strange. George Orwell called this a fairy tail. In context of Grimm's original tales this would be an accurate description. I'm not sure why the essayist drew his conclusion from the Disney version of fairy tales. Other than that, it was a great read.

Four decades after it first shook the nation, then the world, William Peter Blatty's thrilling masterwork of faith and demonic possession returns in an even more powerful form. Raw and profane, shocking and blood-chilling, it remains a modern parable of good and evil and perhaps the most terrifying novel ever written.

On a brisk autumn day, a 13-year-old boy stands on the shores of the gray Atlantic, near a silent amusement park and a fading ocean resort called the Alhambra. The past has driven Jack Sawyer here: His father is gone, his mother is dying, and the world no longer makes sense. But for Jack everything is about to change. For he has been chosen to make a journey back across America - and into another realm. One of the most influential and heralded works of fantasy ever written, The Talisman is an extraordinary novel of loyalty, awakening, terror, and mystery.

Would you try another book from Stephen King and Peter Straub and/or Frank Muller?

This felt like black tower fan fiction to me. Substitute the Black Hotel for the Black Tower and the boy Jack for Jake. Also, you know how at the end of ever Honest Movie trailer the voice guy reads random stuff with emphasis. Frank Muller does that the entire book with special ominous emphasis on the last word of every other sentence.

How could the performance have been better?

Not ominously emphasizing everything. It takes the punch out of the truly ominous parts.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

I might.

Would you consider the audio edition of Heart-Shaped Box to be better than the print version?

I have never read the print, so I don't know if the audio is better but I enjoyed this very much.

What other book might you compare Heart-Shaped Box to and why?

I'm just going to say that Joe Hill is awesomely comparable to Joe Hill. I've added him to my favorite author's list.
