As a direct descendent of Simon de Montfort, Lady Gray de Montfort Serroux has lived her life with the axe of shame hanging over her head. Full of action and adventure and of course a wonderful love story! Really enjoyed listening to this narrator... I think he is now my absolute favorite ;). Also really really liked the secondary love story... A great "2 for 1". Kathryn is just an amazing story teller - rich details, suspense, characters... And no nonsense or long misunderstandings !!! Looking forward to the next in the series!

I simply loved the story but the narration wasn't very good. I have listened to a lot of books by a variety of narrators and this is the first time I just had to stop listening bc the narrators voice was highly annoying and plodding. I ended up reading the book instead. I hate to be negative but wanted to share. Perhaps you can listen to a sample before you buy to see if the voice irritates you. The story and characters were well written and a delight. Glad I had a written version as well!

1200 A.D. - After decades of warring between the Lairds of Kerr and Prudhoe Castle in Northumbria, a tentative peace is reached. The Lady Carington Kerr is sent to Prudhoe as a hostage to ensure her father's good behavior, and a more reluctant hostage there never was. Small and dark, with emerald eyes and a luscious figure, she is as gorgeous as she is fiery. Enter Sir Creed de Reyne; a gentle giant of a man, he is, by nature, calm and wise. He is the ice to Carington's fire.

I am just amazed at how wonderful each of Kathryn's books are - from start to finish! And the narration was fantastic. This was a rich medieval historical romance without a lot of nonsense misunderstandings etc. The love evolves and we get to see them grow in love - with the "I Love You" occurring well before the last chapter such that we can see 'how' these characters love each other now and will interact in the future.

The main angst comes not from their love but outside forces (which I have noticed is a consistent theme with this author - and one I like). There is warmth and humor and passion, and as with other books by this author there is some tragedy to endure - BUT never fear as we get an amazing happily ever after (the epilogue was priceless).

It is A.D. 1486. Fresh from his treacherous turning of the tides against Richard III in the Battle of Bosworth, Sir Gaston de Russe's reputation is dark and dirty. Those loyal to Richard hate him and those loyal to Henry Tudor fear him. He is, after all, The Dark One. In order to gain a strong foothold in Yorkshire, Henry sends Gaston to one of the largest fortresses in the north, a massive bastion called Mt. Holyoak Castle.

Loved every letter (including punctuation!), word, phrase, clause, sentence, paragraph, page, chapter .... You get the idea! The characters were multidimensional and I fell in love with them all! I have been avidly reading this genre for 30 *cough* years and can honestly say this book has a place in my top 10!

The audio reading was magnificent and I really felt immersed in the story and the thoughts and emotions.

The Hero was someone I could not only fall in love with but have a true life happily ever after. I absolutely related to the Heroine who had the spunk and wit to take on her times. HUZZAH!!!!! I can't recommend this more !!!

I will definitely be listening again - I just wish I could go back in time and re listen fresh but alas! I will just have to glom all of Courtney Milans next series!!!

Miss Minerva Lane is a quiet, bespectacled wallflower, and she wants to keep it that way. After all, the last time she was the center of attention, it ended badly - so badly that she changed her name to escape her scandalous past. Wallflowers may not be the prettiest of blooms, but at least they don't get trampled. So when a handsome duke comes to town, the last thing she wants is his attention.

The Duchess War was an absolute delight! The writing was superb, the characterizations real and the plot filled with twists and turns but never frustrating devices. The historical backdrop was enriching and helped set the scene without being trivial wallpaper or a history tome / you felt like you were part of the story and part of the time period! The audible narration added much to the enjoyment as well! I can't wait to read more from Courtney Milan.
