Just enough tech stuff to make the story interesting. Just enough super hero stuff so we can cheer for the good guy. Just enough softhearted stuff to make the hero lovable. Just enough plot twists to keep us from predicting what comes next.

A highly entertaining read. I just have one small problem with the excellent narration. Kate Reading represents the voice of Kay Scarpetta in the Patricia Cornwell books. I have listened to her voice that character through many books, so I keep confusing the main character in this book with Kay Scarpetta. Kate Reading does such a good job on all the characters in this book, from robot voices to those speaking different languages from differing times. I thoroughly enjoyed the book in spite of the mix up in my brain of a character from another series.

Dreadful production. Background music masks dialogue. Plot confusing and impossible to follow. Even if it is free, it's not worth listening.

Cliff Sims claims some religious high ground, but remains proud of his work to get Trump elected, get Jeff Sessions appointed Attorney general, and getting the Huge Tax cut for the rich through congress; as if these are accomplishments of some moral value. His view is that it was the lack of planning and cohesion causing this wreck of an administration, rather than the lies and greed at it's heart. He seems as deluded at the end of his 500 days as he was during the campaign and in the White House.

All critical thinking must be suspended. As a private pilot, the flying and crash are unbelievable. Anyone who has ever winter camped in the mountains will be tortured by the impossible climate. And the medicine is hokey too. Have you ever broken your ribs? The idea that you could effectively do anything to help yourself after that is ludicrous. The dog is real! ...and I am still puzzled by the ending.

Exhausting unbelievable. While I usually love smart women who kick butt, this male author has no insight into the female mind. His men aren't credible either. The portrayal of small town politics lacks depth. And the dialogue---no one talks like this!

If you could sum up The Fifth Doll in three words, what would they be?

Curiouser and Curiouser

Would you be willing to try another book from Charlie N. Holmberg? Why or why not?

Yes

What does Angela Dawe bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Angela Dawe made this book happen. Her Russian accent and ability to vary her character's voices made listening seamless. You are drawn into another culture, another time.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No.

Any additional comments?

The story line dragged in the middle and the denouement left much hanging. A little more time at the end and a little less mucking about in the middle would have been more satisfying.

What did you love best about Death Benefits?

I like almost all Thomas Perry's books. This one was especially entertaining with a detailed uncovering of an unsuspected fraud. The inspector who only answers to his own set of rules is always interesting.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

The hero doesn't know what is happening. He's always caught off guard and the listeners is also surprised along with him.

What does Michael Kramer bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I'm used to Michael Kramer's voice. It's like an old friend.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, but of course that's not possible.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes. Interesting, fresh.

If you’ve listened to books by Joe Ide before, how does this one compare?

First one.

What about Sullivan Jones’s performance did you like?

I would listen to this again just because I enjoyed the dialogue so much. Gritty and authentic.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, but I also didn't want it to end, so I stretched it out.

Any additional comments?

It was a little difficult to follow the switches of characters and times. After I got to know the characters, it became easier. The author ties it all together at the end and made me want to go back and listen to it again for what I am sure I missed. It's interestingly complicated and I love books about smart people.

Would you consider the audio edition of Amarillo to be better than the print version?

Didn't read the print.

What other book might you compare Amarillo to and why?

Reminded me of books written by James Lee Burke.

Have you listened to any of Michael Butler Murray’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Bailey getting shot. Loved almost all the characters
Max talking about his encounters with his gym teacher.

Any additional comments?

Great character development. One problem...I thought that if a client insisted on testifying, his lawyer had to let him.
