In Will Eisner: A Dreamer's Life in Comics, Michael Schumacher delves beneath Eisner's public persona to draw connections between his life and his art. Eisner's career spanned a remarkable eight decades, from his scrappy survival at the dawn of comics' Golden Age in the late 1930s to the beginning of the 21st century, when Pulitzers began going to graphic novels (a term Eisner is widely credited with creating).

I started reading this because I'm doing research and wanted to know a bit more about the man. What I discovered was an incredibly complex individual who defined and redefined the world of graphic storytelling over the years. Having the comics industry's highest award named for him is certainly applicable.

On the down side, Schumacher will occasionally veer into side paths and stories which, while sometimes tangentially related, often feel as though they are there for padding. As well, Morey's narration of the main text is fine, but he's got only two other voices he uses for pretty much everyone else. I suppose I've gotten spoiled by the generally high quality of the Audible narrators.

John Bolen might be a good reader for other books but when he drops into sotto voce for the women, it's unlistenable. I couldn't get past the first chapter.

This was a book I'd read as a child and loved. I picked it up here because it was inexpensive and went along with the whispersync program. Even at .99¢ it's not worth the audio price. I guess I'll just have to re-read this one the old fashioned way.

The science fiction classic that coined the term "time machine" and is generally credited with the popularization of the concept of time travel. A must listen for any fan of science fiction!

How did the narrator detract from the book?

The narrator would pause, frequently in the middle of a sentence, as if he needed more energy to continue. It was distracting and ultimately, greatly diminished my enjoyment of the book itself.
