I thought the writing was outstanding. The plot is going to require a significant leap of faith, however... Not that I can't get there. If an author entertains me, I follow her off the bridge. An epilogue would've been a nice way to end the book because it just sort of ends right after the climax. I needed an after dinner mint.

On the surface, Lydia Fitzsimons has the perfect life - wife of a respected, successful judge, mother to a beloved son, mistress of a beautiful house in Dublin. That beautiful house, however, holds a secret. And when Lydia’s son, Laurence, discovers its secret, wheels are set in motion that lead to an increasingly claustrophobic and devastatingly dark climax.

The great: The narration was stellar. Not only did her passion show in the performance, but her pronunciation of foreign accents and languages were spot on. She made the book come alive!
The good: Although I still have many questions about the motivations behind what the characters did and how they felt about each other, I think the author wrote a compelling story about the painful relationship between a mother and daughter as they each vie for the affection of the husband/father who remains rather weak and easily swayed, but likeable enough.
The part that didn't work: This novel doesn't have a twist, and it's strong enough to not need one... The problem I had was that I didn't feel there was a conclusion worthy of the story. The book just sort of ended with many unanswered questions and I felt a little cheated.

I've listened to hundreds of books on audible, and my standards to even write a review are pretty high, so when I say this book is FREAKING OUTSTANDING, you just need to believe me. This story is graphic and dark but not violent or gory. It's an original psychological horror steeped in plausibility. I loved this book. The performances were top notch and the character development was exceptional. ** A word of caution, however... Do not listen to this book and try to navigate unknown territory in your car. You might get so wrapped up in in, you wind up going an hour out of your way. It may have happened to a friend of mine...

An 11-year-old boy's violated corpse is found in a town park. Eyewitnesses and fingerprints point unmistakably to one of Flint City's most popular citizens. He is Terry Maitland, Little League coach, English teacher, husband, and father of two girls. Detective Ralph Anderson, whose son Maitland once coached, orders a quick and very public arrest. Maitland has an alibi, but Anderson and the district attorney soon add DNA evidence to go with the fingerprints and witnesses. Their case seems ironclad.

I love Stephen King, but sometimes I feel like he doesn't know when to edit. He weaves a tale that makes you obsessed and then over explains it to the point where it's no longer scary. I realize this is an unpopular opinion, but it's my perception with a lot of his novels.

Sam Hill always saw the world through different eyes. Born with red pupils, he was called “Devil Boy” or Sam “Hell” by his classmates; “God’s will” is what his mother called his ocular albinism. Her words were of little comfort, but Sam persevered. Sam believed it was God who sent Ernie Cantwell, the only African American kid in his class, to be the friend he so desperately needed. And that it was God’s idea for Mickie Kennedy to storm into Our Lady of Mercy like a tornado, uprooting every rule Sam had been taught about boys and girls. Forty years later, Sam, a small-town eye doctor, is no longer certain anything was by design.

This is the book I needed to read. Sam Hell is in all of us and we need to remember our compassion when we recognize him in others and in ourselves. Few books have made me cry. This one did, but it also made me want to call my parents and tell them, "Thank you for always loving me." The narrator is sheer perfection.

Kat and Doug felt like Aurora Village was the perfect community. Minutes from the city, affluent without pretension, low crime with a friendly vibe - it’s everything Kat never had, and that she’s determined to provide for her infant daughter. But everything changes overnight when Kat finds a scrawled note outside their front door. That wasn’t very neighborly of you. As increasingly sinister and frighteningly personal notes arrive, each one stabs deeper into the heart of Kat’s insecurities, paranoia, and most troubling, her past.

This book is about a woman, her husband, and her baby relocating to a dream like suburban community with neighbors who have secrets. Although she doesn't know it, she has enemies from her past who also live there and will stop at nothing to see her leave. That's why I bought the book. Unfortunately, the neighbor's secrets are implausible and just plain stupid. I credit the narrator with making me listen, but I couldn't stop rolling my eyes. This is a solid NO from me. Wish I had the credit again.

Every word counts and if it doesn't contribute to her vision, she mercilessly edits until we're left with am action packed novel without the fluff. I've read both books and she's the real deal!
