Anne Lamott meets Elizabeth Gilbert in this inspirational, side-splittingly funny exploration of the power of living with love, forgiveness, and honesty. Glennon Melton became a sensation when her personal essays started going viral. Giving language to our universal (yet often secret) experiences, her hilarious and poignant observations were read by millions, shared among friends, discussed at water coolers, quoted in The New York Times, and have inspired a social movement.

In this breathtakingly inventive autobiographical novel, Eileen Myles transforms life into a work of art. Told in her audacious voice, made vivid and immediate in her lyrical language, Chelsea Girls cobbles together memories of Myles's 1960s Catholic upbringing with an alcoholic father, her volatile adolescence, her unabashed "lesbianity," and her riotous pursuit of survival as a poet in 1970s New York.

In a strange world where Rose McGowan was continually on display, stardom soon became a personal nightmare of constant exposure and sexualization. Rose escaped into the world of her mind, something she had done as a child, and into high-profile relationships. Every detail of her personal life became public, and the realities of an inherently sexist industry emerged with every script, role, public appearance, and magazine cover. The Hollywood machine packaged her as a sexualized bombshell, hijacking her image and identity and marketing them.

I was so put off by the weirdness o f singing and stuff in the beginning. I just want to love be Rose so much then she opens her mouth. I’m glad she is brave and I know she’s been through a lot she kinda reminds me of Courtney Love, or Sean Young idk there’s just sooooooo much ego to get through to get to the meat of the story. Had to return it. I feel that her as the narrator was a BAD choice

After the sudden death of her husband, Sheryl Sandberg felt certain that she and her children would never feel pure joy again. "I was in 'the void,'" she writes, "a vast emptiness that fills your heart and lungs and restricts your ability to think or even breathe." Her friend Adam Grant, a psychologist at Wharton, told her there are concrete steps people can take to recover and rebound from life-shattering experiences. We are not born with a fixed amount of resilience. It is a muscle that everyone can build.

I read this book in all honesty because so many authors I like praised it (Glennon Doyal Wambach, Brenee Brown) . Then I realized it was about grief and loss of a spouse and I was worried I wouldn't be able to relate to it. But it was a good book. I cried and cried. I had a uncle take his own life in 2014 and this book so blessed me with wisdom that I didn't have and I began reaching out to my aunt and cousins again and speaking his name. I realized that most of the way we handle death is wrong and actually compounds the trauma for the family of the deceased.
This is emotional and it will make you feel things you might not want to it's not a light or easy read. But it will help you when faced with loss. And it helps to open your eyes to others who deal with loss.
The author is real and raw and funny and it's a gift to me her vulnerability.

This was a really good read if you're looking for a little spirituality but not a bunch of religious or super spiritual heavy writing. Which can also be good at times. But this was funny and thought-provoking and funny. Highly recommend this to anyone who's into eastern religion or meditation or yoga.

Here she dispels the cultural myth that vulnerability is weakness and reveals that it is, in truth, our most accurate measure of courage.
