In 48 hours, the Earth will be hit by a coronal mass ejection (CME) from the sun, a "Carrington Event" that has the power to shut down and possibly destroy the world's electrical infrastructure. To try and prevent permanent damage, everything goes dark prior to the hit: Global communications are shut down; hospital emergency generators are disconnected; the entire internet, media broadcasting, and cell phone systems are turned off. Will the world's population successfully defend itself in the wake of the CME, or will mass panic lead to the breakdown of society as we know it?

Concepts in this SHTF novel are unique and very thought provoking. I read many on this topic, and Bill Forstchen brings an absolutely unique view into play with 48 hours.

I also have done many audio books narrated by Bronson Pinochet. He has always earned five stars previous to this one. I rated at three as I grew weary of what felt like lots of over-exaggeration. Perhaps this was due to an over aggressive producer, but it really annoyed me.

That said, the writing, topics, challenges and approach were fantastic, as I have come to expect from Forstchen.

Certainly this could be read and very much enjoyed as a stand alone book. If you haven’t read the others, don’t let that stop you from giving this one a listen. Either way it is 5 stars all the way.

Enjoy!

In this revelatory narrative covering the years 1967 to 2017, Steven Brill gives us a stunningly cogent picture of the broken system at the heart of our society. He shows us how, over the last half-century, America's core values - meritocracy, innovation, due process, free speech, and even democracy itself - have somehow managed to power its decline into dysfunction.

As a result, nuclear Armageddon hangs over us like a mighty sword. Military analysts agree that the United States can't start World War III. Why? We might lose.
