Freefall audiobook cover art

Excellent text book

Overall
4 out of 5 stars

Who am I to evaluate Joe Stiglitz?
Excellent text book but very dry. No humor, no anecdotes. I might be silly, but for this reason I liked "The Big Short" better.
I did the book injustice and myself disservice by reading it after a series of like books which rendered a lot of the information here redundant.

Never been so disappointed

The guy obviously has special talents, but he seems to suffer from a low self esteem. He can be a king maker, but never thinks of becoming the king.
I was hoping that the book will focus on ideology and strategy. It starts like that, but very fast descends to the petty level of "The good guys vs. the bad guys".
Many places in the book he offers rebuttal to certain accusations, but his only proof is his word by saying "Not so". Only in one place, he offers a proof.
According to him, there are only three types of mistakes that can be attributed to President George W. Bush. 1- A mistake that never happened. 2- One that happened, but actually is not a mistake. 3- A mistake that happened, but actually it was Karl Rove's mistake not Bush's.

An eye opener

The reckless, greedy and immoral behavior of Wall street in full display.
Even if you were not disgusted enough with the bailout, this book will make sick.
Pros: Doesn't hold any punches and doesn't try to make friends.
Cons: If you don't have a bit of an exposure to investment banking, this book could be hard to understand at times.
I didn't see the necessity for airing the personal life of Dr. Michael Burry

Informative lecture series

It is very informative, but I wouldn't call this a book. It is all over the place from monetary policy, to the environment to the world government to how you should talk to your doctor to how to invest your money.
Pros: Informative. Non partisan approach to politics
Cons: Scattered. At the end, he throws a pitch about his investment group. That was a bit disappointing to me.

Blackwater audiobook cover art

Blackwater and other war profiteers

Overall

Mr. Scahill offers an insight into the entire war profiteering business inside and outside Washington. I found it to be very informative.
It is interesting to see the decline of Blackwater in the days that followed the publishing of the book and I don't know that that there is a cause and effect relationship here. One thing I know is that Blackwater overreached and probably tumbled because of that!
I found it to be interesting that both Jeremy Scahill and Naomi Klein reference each other's books (Blackwater and Shock Doctrine) respectively from within their books. I guess it suggests they were collaborating while writing their books which is not unheard of in the business of writing books.
